Standard 7 - Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the
community
7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities. Understand and apply the key
principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.

7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.


Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and
processes required for teachers according to school stage.

Example 1: Police checks for parents or anyone working with children in the school.


Example 2: Excursion check list appropriate ratios of adults for supervising the
number of students on the excursion.

7.3 Engage with the parents/carers. Understand strategies for working effectively,
sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.

Example 1: Each student has a communications book that goes to and from school
on a daily basis, along with the class newsletter.




Example 2: Student confidentiality when talking to those outside the school or other
parents.

Example 3: Community readers understand the confidentiality required for the
students they help.

Example 4: Put aside personal feelings of parents and still work with them within the
classroom setting.

7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities.


Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in
broadening teachers professional knowledge and practice.

Example 1: Erosion excursion using a parent who was a volcanologist. Using their
experience to help teach specific subjects. Use experts within the school community,
such as Max's mum who is part of the 'scientists in schools program'.

Example 2: Author visit - bringing the professional to meet the children. She
answered questions and inspired them to become writers. She also provided
valuable advise on a writers potential career path that the children could understand
and relate to. Pictured below is Angelica Banks author of Finding Serendipity
which was the class novel at the time.
