What accommodations or modifications do
you make for ESOL, Gifted/Talented
students, Learning/Reading disabilities
(SLD), etc.

Resources/Materials

1. Anticipatory Set: Review the American flag section of the KWL chart. Then
fill out the Liberty Bell what we know and what we want to know sections.
2. Introduction/Activating prior knowledge: Liberty Bell will be passed around
and students will be asked what they notice about the bell or what they already
know (ESOL). We will have a class discussion about the students ideas
3. Read and discuss the book The Liberty Bell. Students will be instructed to
listen quietly and intently during reading, and then to participate in discussion.
4. Show students the virtual Liberty Bell at nformationdesign.com on the
SmartBoard. Students will be able to take turns visiting the board and exploring
the virtual bell throughout the period (ESOL).
5. Ask students, What is the Liberty Bell a symbol of? I will write on a big
piece of paper, The Liberty Bell is a symbol of freedom.
6. Students will make their own liberty bells out of paper. Students will draw a
bell shape (after being shown an example) and then cut it out. A small yellow
circle piece of paper will be provided for the bell. Students will then draw a
crack on their bell with black marker. All of the bells will be taped on to the big
piece of paper that says, The Liberty Bell is a symbol of freedom, and then
hung up on the wall.
7. To close the lesson we will fill out the what we learned section of the
KWL chart.
ALL resources should be noted here including but not limited to: internet sites, professional
resources- books, journals (titles and authors), childrens literature, etc.
