S’pore sports
sector tops
$1b mark
for first time
S INGAPORE’S sports industry’s contribution to
the economy last year topped the $1 billion
mark for the first time.
This puts it well on track to meet the Committee
on Sporting Singapore’s “$2-billion-a-year by 2015”
target, announced last year.
And, with new top-class sporting events this year
– such as golf’s HSBC Women’s Champions and the
SingTel Formula One Grand Prix – it could mean
that this year’s figures, when tallied, could go well
over that mark.
The F1 Grand Prix, for example, was projected to
have added $100 million to the country’s coffers.
The sports-industry sector, which comprises
hosting of sports events, investments by sports
companies and corporate sponsorships, has been
growing in the past few years.
In 2001, it contributed $680 million to
Singapore’s gross domestic product. By 2004, this
figure was $680 million. A year later it was $796
million and in 2006, it shot up to $906 million.
A flurry of marquee events staged here has been
powering the industry’s growth, including the Aviva
Ironman 70.3 and Fina/Arena Swimming World
Cup.
Other major events that will arrive on Singapore
shores soon are the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup
and Asian Youth Games next year, the inaugural
Youth Olympics in 2010, the 2011 World Netball
Championships, and 2013 South-east Asia Games.
When ready, the private-sector driven Sports Hub
at Kallang and permanent motor-sports track at
Changi will also provide big financial boosts to the
sports industry.
Twenty20 cricket matches and an Asean club
Football League are slated to be held at the Sports
Hub, while at least two international-level events like
the World Touring Car Championship and A1 Grand
Prix may be staged at the permanent track annually.
New corporate sponsorships, especially from
financial institutions, have also contributed to the
uptrend.
OCBC Bank recently pumped in $1 million to be
the title sponsor for next year’s Cycle Singapore
event. POSB Bank spent $1.4 million on the ongoing
