The Theme Secretary:

Book Corner Club Meeting Date:
Title of Reader:
You are The Theme Secretary. A theme is a topic or idea which is explored in a novel. For example,
the central themes in Moby Dick are obsession, madness and revenge. Read and complete section 4 of
Writing an Essay an introduction to key concepts and literary terms on the academic writing section
of this website before you start, to help you express yourself more effectively during the meeting.
You have three jobs:
1 While you are reading the story your job is to decide what the themes are, and which two or three
themes are the most important. Explain your opinion and why you think the writer chose them. If
the story was written a long time ago, decide if the themes are still important now. Give examples
or evidence to support your opinion. Finally, think of one question to ask the other Club members
regarding the themes.
2 At the meeting, it is your job to listen carefully and take notes on a separate sheet of paper. Listen
to your Club members opinions, questions and answers. Write down as many as you can.
3 Show your notes to the other members of the Book Corner Club so you can write a summary of the
meeting, as a group.
