1. Discuss kinetic and static friction
2. Compare and contrast beneficial materials for building a rollercoaster
3. Identify the formula for kinetic friction and static friction
Enduring Understanding

Assessments

What is the importance of friction in physics?

Essential Questions
What is the difference between kinetic and static friction?
What materials are best for building a rollercoaster demonstration?
What factors affect and/or determine whether there is kinetic or static friction?

Formal: Students will be tested with a multiple choice and open-ended math
questions related to friction (Objective 3)
Informal: Use wikispaces to discuss friction (Objective 1)
Informal: Use wikispaces to create a list of comparisons differences of beneficial
rollercoaster materials (Objective 2)
Materials
Computer
Internet
Wikispaces account
Procedure
1. Present lecture on friction
T: Explain difference between kinetic and static friction and their formulas.
Demonstrate how to find friction. Answer questions as needed.
S: Listen and take notes. Ask questions as needed.
2. Present materials for rollercoaster
T: Show students materials you want them to compare and contrast for building a
rollercoaster
S: Listen and ask questions as needed.
3. Demonstrate Wikispaces
T: Show where and how to log on and create an account. Also demonstrate how to
make a post.
S: Listen and take notes. Ask questions if needed.
4. Facilitate a brief preparatory discussion on friction and rollercoasters
T: Direct a class discussion about their ideas on friction and which materials are best
for the rollercoaster to prepare for their assignment.
S: Participate in discussion
