Implementation, Evaluation and Reflection

Implementation, Evaluation, and Reflection of ADDIE Model

After analyzing the results of my Likert Scale format survey, I was able to decipher the
area that would be best served by implementing a Professional Development (PD) session for my
colleagues on staff. I designed and developed a plan to move forward with this PD session. On
November 14, 2014 I was able to meet with six fellow teachers as well as one of the two
administrators on staff and implement my plan of presenting, sharing, explaining, demonstrating
and discussing the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD.org)
website along with the various membership packages available. The presentation was intended to
offer another tool to staff to help keep current with changes in educational technology research.
After staff members had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with and learn about
the ASCD website and its various features, I answered questions from them and addressed their
concerns. One staff member indicated that she liked the ASCD website and thought that a
membership would be beneficial for our staff. One concern from a different staff member was
that she did not want books and magazines sent to the school because previous experience had
shown that staff rarely views these resources. I reflected back to her what I had heard in order to
gain clarity and explained that we could purchase a membership that was strictly digital. The
second concern was an ethical concern about purchasing one membership for more than one
person. A great discussion between our staff ensued with the agreement that it would be best for
staff to choose individually if he or she would like to purchase a membership to ASCD and that
money from his or her PD account could be used to help pay for it.
I continued to probe staff to determine if there were further concerns. Two staff members
indicated that they want something like ASCD, but from a Canadian perspective and more
closely related to other Online Schools similar to our school. A third staff member offered a

suggestion for a website titled canelearn.net which addresses these suggestions. This led to staff
exploring the website and discussing its strengths and applicability to the needs of our staff.
I feel fortunate to be part of a staff that is open-minded, knowledgeable and willing to
share their expertise. The outcome of the PD session was not necessarily that all staff wanted to
purchase a membership for ASCD but they better understood its usefulness. I feel though that
because I initiated a conversation with staff about the need to use research based methods of
staying current with educational technology we were able to communicate more specifically the
needs and interests of our staff. The collaboration amongst staff proved to be the strength in
making a decision that best met our needs.
In reflecting on the ADDIE process, I can see many things that I believe I did well, but
also see certain changes I would make given the chance to implement the plan again. The postPD survey results showed a slight increase in response to the question I addressed through the
session. One thing I would have changed was the wording of the question in the pre-PD survey
to inquire about whether staff were familiar with or understood the usefulness of the ASCD
website rather than if they used the website. This would have allowed me to have a better
understanding of the effectiveness of my PD session, however in the post-PD survey I asked
more questions to allow me to address this. I also would like to have had the PD session
available to the entire staff although only two members were missing. My strengths included
designing and developing a clear and logical plan and then implementing it effectively. I believe
that I demonstrated my leadership abilities of open-mindedness, patience and listening skills,
which were of great benefit during implementation. Rather than become frustrated with reluctant
staff, I chose to calmly reflect back that I heard the concern and offered a suggestion to address
the concern. I was also open to the sharing that happened from other staff that only made the PD

more effective. I believe that I created a flexible agenda that met the needs and direction of the
group. I encouraged staff input, which ultimately meant that there was no ego involved and it
was another staff members idea that turned out to be the one that best met the needs of the staff.
