PART 1: SELF-REGULATION AT A PROFESSION LEVEL

Describe what is meant by a self-regulating healthcare profession. What people,
organizations, or things are present in order to make massage therapy a self-regulating
profession in Ontario? Describe their role in self-regulation.
A self-regulated health care profession is when the college makes decision for the
profession and professionals involved instead of the government. This means that the
government allows the college to regulate and create their own rules, regulation and their
own governing board. Massage therapy is a healthcare profession and is under rule of the
Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. The massage therapy scope of practice is
defined by The RHPA act of 1991. When the act was passed the profession of massage
therapy was recognized as a health care profession. The College of Massage therapy is
also responsible for regulation of the profession. CMTO deals with the registration,
standards of practice, examination of new applicants and misconduct of all registered
massage therapists in Ontario. The College of Massage Therapists is also responsible to
investigate all complaints from the public. CMTO also has a role in educating the pubic
of what massage therapy is. One of the main roles of CMTO is to protect the public.
The mandate of the College is to ensure the public interest is placed at the center of all
College activities (CMTO). The CMTO also controls the title Registered massage
therapist. The use of such titles as registered nurse, RN, nurse practitioner, and
nurse is protected by legislation (Understanding Self-regulation, 2007).

PART 2: SELF-REGULATION AT A PERSONAL LEVEL

Describe what is meant by self-regulation at a personal level. How does self-regulation
support massage therapists as individuals? Use examples to illustrate how this might

occur. How might self-regulation contribute to quality assurance? Again, use examples
to illustrate your points.
Self-regulation at a personal level means that the massage therapists are accountable for
what they do. They need to follow the standards of practice and work in accordance to
the scope of practice. Self-regulation at a personal level occurs when the Massage
Therapists complete continuing education programs. Through these programs they can
improve their skills and knowledge and acquire new one. Massage therapists also need to
be responsible for self-assessment. Self-assessment contributes to Quality assurance
thought peer assessment and continuing education units. The College prescribes and
evaluates a continuous quality improvement program for members. The College
publishes a list of courses that may be used as continuous education units (RMTAO).
