Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes)

A. Students will be able to identify properties of matter by observing different objects and
recording observations.
B. Students will be able to
Instructional Materials
A. Video: Properties of Matter
1. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/properties-ofmatter.htm
B. Properties of Matter Quiz (20)
C. Inquiry graphic organizer (20)
D. Balance
E. Scale
F. Vocabulary cards
G. Inquiry objects: book, pencil, crayon, stuffed animal, stress ball
Subject Matter/ Content
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Describe objects using five senses
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Property the characteristics of an object
2. Matter anything that takes up space
3. Mass how much space something takes up
4. Weight how heavy something is
5. Volume the amount of space something takes up
6. Scale measurement tool used to weigh objects
7. Balance measurement tool used to compare the weight of two objects
C. Big Ideas
1. Use five senses to describe objects
2. Compare and contrast objects and their characteristics

IV.

Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The teacher will tell students that they will be using their five sense to explore
objects.
2. The teacher will ask students to list the five senses.
3. The teacher will record them on the board for later use.
4. The teacher will show video: Properties of Matter.
B. Development
1. The teacher will introduce the new vocabulary words.
2. The teacher will have definitions on separate cards and will ask for volunteers to
try and match definition to vocabulary word.
3. Teacher will correct any mistakes and read aloud word with correct definitions.
a. While reading off definitions the teacher will hold up the tools and
pause to explain how each one is used.
4. The teacher will then explain that they will be doing an inquiry on properties of
matter.
5. The teacher will introduce the four ways they will be describing objects: size,
shape, texture, and color.
6. The teacher will also explain that they will be taking objects and weighing them
and comparing weights of objects.
7. The teacher will use a pencil box and an eraser as an example.
a. Eraser is hard, pink, square, and smooth
b. Pencil box is hard, red, rectangular, and bumpy.
c. The teacher will use the scale and weigh each item.
d. The teacher will use the balance to compare the weight of two items.
8. The teacher will group students into groups of 4.
9. The students will be given 5 objects per group to complete the inquiry graphic
organizer.
10.
Each group will be given a balance for comparing weight and they will
share the scale between all groups.
11.
When the students have completed the graphic organizer they will pair
up with another group. Each group will name and describe one item using the
graphic organizer they completed.
12.
The students will then return to their seats.

Jams video.
2. The students will complete the quiz individually.
3. The students will hand their tests in and teacher will go over correct answers.
4. The teacher will ask students to describe one object using two of their five
senses at the end of class. (verbal exit slip)
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. Students who have difficulty with gross motor skills will be paired a buddy to
help them hold and feel the object to make observations.

V.

VI.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative: The students will complete a graphic organizer on properties of
matter. The teacher will use a checklist for each item on the graphic organizer
to see if students have correctly completed each section or not.
2. Formative: The students will be given a paper copy of the test provided on
Study Jams related to the video. The students will be given a score out of 7 for
how many they got correct. The answers will be gone over after tests are
turned in, at the end of the class.
Reflective Response
A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of States Objectives
B. Personal Reflection
1. How could I have improved my lesson?
2. Were my students engaged?
3. How did I adapt the lesson from the textbook and why?
4. What are some changes I could have made?
