The program competency I will be discussing is developmentally appropriate instruction.

Developmentally appropriate instruction is a very important aspect in teaching. When
developing lesson plans the teacher should make sure the teaching style is adapted to the students
in the classroom. Ensuring the lessons are developmentally appropriate will help to facilitate
learning and enhance children's development.
Rationale
The artifact for this competency is a bingo game that I created to assist the students with
learning ordinal numbers and the difference between the number form and the word form of an
ordinal number. I used this bingo game as an introduction to learning ordinal position. In the
game I would call out the different numbers, I had to classify the numbers by saying the word
form of the number or the number form of it. The students filled their board with game chips
and the first to have five in a row was able to call out BINGO. I checked to make sure they had
the correct numbers that had been called out. I did notice that sometimes they may have gotten
the word form and the number form confused. I feel that this lesson was important for the
students to understand the difference between the two because when taking the standardized test
it is important to understand the different verbiage that will be used.

Reflection
The artifact included is a copy of one of the bingo boards I created that shows a different
approach to learning thorough a game as opposed to direct instruction. The SOL standard 2.2 is
that the student should be able to identify ordinal positions first through twentieth and write the
ordinal numbers. This activity is an introduction to understand how to write and identify the
ordinal numbers in number and word form. Developmentally appropriate instruction is about

meeting the children where they are as individuals and as part of a group. I was able to get an
understanding of where the children where by walking around and observing if they were putting
their game chips in the correct spaces. It is important to provide children with balanced
instruction that will focus on building on what they already know. Children benefit greatly from
hands-on experience. This artifact is a great example of a hands-on activity that allows them to
develop the skills they need to master the standard.
