The Christian Church as a Discourse Community

Throughout known history, Christianity has united people all over the planet with solely
the power of belief. There are hundreds of other religions, with millions of followers. So one
might ask him or herself, what knowledge do they have to possess in order to be a part of the
Christian Church? Christian churches customarily share a set of common goals that involve
preaching the gospel and sharing Gods love throughout the world, providing church services
along with bible studies, and strengthening the faith between the churches members and Jesus.
Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, which were recorded in the
collection of books, known as The Bible, also known as the Holy Book of Christianity, the
Sword, and many other names. The Bible consists of two main parts, Old Testament, and New
Testament. During Church services, the preacher would retell the stories from the Bible, focusing
on a topic of a concern. Even though lots of information based on the Bible is given during
church services, it is highly recommended to read and learn the Bible on ones own for better
understanding, and also not to rely on the preacher, rather on the Bible.
The gospel, also referred to as the good news, is the cornerstone of Christianity.
Everything is based on the gospel. It begins with explaining that humanity was lost in sin, and
that the consequence of sin is death. People were doomed to hell, a place of eternal suffering, all
because in order to enter heaven, a place of eternal peace and happiness, one had to be blameless
and perfect. Luckily for humanity, God, the creator of everything, loved the world so much that
He had thought of a way to help the human kind, and give them salvation from hell. Jesus, the
Son of God, became the way for humans. He came unto the sinful Earth with complete purity
and perfection, and he lived his life committing no sin at all. During this time, the Roman Empire
was flourishing, and leaders did not like the idea of people worshiping someone other than their

gods. Along with this, the Jews did not like the idea of Jesus either. They did not believe Jesus
was the Son of God, or the Messiah, the savior of the world. Both of these hatreds eventually led
to Jesus being convicted of blasphemy. He was whipped and beaten and then sentenced to death
by crucifixion. When he was crucified, he became the ultimate sacrifice to cover all of the sin of
the earth. Jesus gave everyone a chance to go to heaven, even though they could not meet the
expectations to enter Heaven. All God wants in return is faith and obedience, which are the fruits
of faith. Three days after being dead Jesus arose from the dead, showing everyone that he is who
he said he was, a Son of God. Jesus commanded his disciples to go and spread the gospel to the
ends of the world. Till this day, Christians are still proclaiming the gospel and helping all over
the world to demonstrate their obedience to Jesus Christ, through loving and aiding others.
Even though there is a stronger emphasis on reaching out to others in their time of need,
the church is also very focused on aiding and strengthening the members within it. Churches
often act as safe havens for people that are struggling with things in life. People can go and open
up and connect with each other, without being judged. With trust being built, members feel freer
to build relationships with each other outside of the church. Many people find life-long friends
through church.
The church offers things such as Bible studies. Studies like this are often meant to help
Christians interpret and understand the bible, and teach people how they should take that
knowledge and use it in life. Churches also provide weekly newsletters via email to report
anything that is happening inside of the community, along with any information that could be
useful to members. On the other hand, members can write letters containing their needs, prayer
requests, gratitude and much more. Usually during church services, one of the pastors makes

announcements of any special upcoming events or asks the church to pray for particular
members as they go through tough times, or any information pertaining to the church life.
Church isnt just a simple club. It is its own microcosm, in which communication is vital
to its growth and functioning. Christian Churches may vary from place to place, but they all
share one main goal in common and it is to share the gospel, help those in need and serve each
other for strengthening faith in Christ.
