LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I. Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration: Title should reflect the essential question
under investigation.
Lesson #4 Grade-4th, Finding Something New, Three Classes, 50 minutes each
II. Lesson Rationale:
Lesson will help students understand there are still things to be found in our world in an effort to
encourage exploration and an interest in science. Through thinking about the unknown will also
expand their creativity.
III. Key Concepts:
We can explore new things.
There are benefits to exploring.
IV. Essential Question:
What can we explore?
What is good or bad about exploring?
V. Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to paint a new animal.
Students will be able to explain their new discoveries and how they can help humanity.
VI. Specific Art Content:
List the specific art content to be taught, such as concepts about art, the nature of art, skills, elements
and principles, processes, and techniques used to communicate ideas.
Students will learn how to paint texture.
VII. Resources & Materials for Teacher:
Slide show of new discover species of plants and animals. Also, explains medical and agricultural
potential benefits of these finds.
Slides show of photo shopped animals (Ex. Combined baboon and sparrow into one)
Slide show explaining who are discovering these finds

VIII. Resources & Materials for Students:
variety of brushes (40 count)
Acrylic paint (five sets of black, white, blue, red, yellow)
30 pallets

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day of the Lesson 1st day
1. Introduction/Motivation (10 minutes)
Slide show of newly discovered species of plants and animals that explains medical and
agricultural potential benefits of these finds. Will help interest students in new species.
2. Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Will show students a drawing example of a creature I made up and read the story that goes
along with it explaining what the animal is, where and how they found it, and if the animal can
benefit humans.
Show power point of photo-shopped animals to inspire students
3. Independent Practice (30 minutes)
Students will draw their own made up animal (Will be told that they will be painting this later).
They will then write a short story that explains what the animal is, where and how they found
it, and if the animal can benefit humans.
4. Closure( 5 minutes)
Students will pair up in twos and share their drawing and story. They will then clean up and
turn in their work.
5. Formative Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on their writing. Paper must explain what the animal is, where and
how they found it, and if the animal can benefit humans.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
Materials will be set up at group tables to save time
Students will be warned for breaking rules the first time, second time =small talk with
teacher, third time = write up
Students will be told to write name on paper before starting work
Teacher will go around helping/keeping students on task
Day of the Lesson 2
1. Introduction/Motivation 5 min.
Show power point of who discovers new species to introduce different type of careers to
students.
2. Guided Practice 5 min.
Show students how to create texture with paint
3. Independent Practice 30 min.
Students will paint their animals
4. Closure 10 min.
Students will go around desk to see other students paintings and writings to see how others
approached the task for five minutes. Then they will clean up for the remaining time.
5. Formative Evaluation
Students will be evaluated on if they finished their painting and if their animal matches
their writing.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
Materials will be set up at center table to save time
Students will be warned for breaking rules the first time, second time =small talk with
teacher, third time = write up
Teacher will go around helping/keeping students on task
Students will wear smock/aprons

Groups will split into cleaning assignments (1. Clean brushes, 2. Clean pallets, 3. Clean
desk, 4. Clean floors 5. Make sure materials organized)
