eats. All students will be able to participate by naming the food items that the caterpillar eats in
the story. Participation from all students will also involve completing the art activity after the
story is read. The activity I have planned is coffee filter butterflies to go along with the theme of

Introduction / Readiness (5 minutes)

-Hello Boys and girls! Today we are going to be reading a big book called The Very Hungry
Caterpillar
-Look how big this book is! How many of you have seen a book that was this big? Please raise
your hand.
-How many of you have ever read The Very Hungry Caterpillar?
-Have any of you ever seen a caterpillar before? Lets look at the cover if you have ever seen a
caterpillar do they look like the one here?
-Does anyone have a guess what this very hungry caterpillar may eat?
-What do you think the types of food that caterpillars should eat?
Wow! Those were all great ideas! In a couple of seconds we will find the answers to those
questions, but first, let me tell you a few directions before we start to read.
Direction number 1: We are going to sit crisscross applesauce while I read the story, unless I
specifically ask you to come up and help me.
Direction number 2: We raise our hands and wait for me to call on you before you say what you
want to say.
-Now lets begin the story!
Focus (15-20 minutes)
-Students will be selected to come up and count the number of food items that the caterpillar
eats with the pointer. I will call on a different student each time to count the number of food
items. All students will be able to participate by naming the food items that the caterpillar eats
in the story.
-Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the students using the pointer for word one to one
correspondence
-The pre-questions were asked during the readiness warm-up
Questions that I will ask when I read:
*How man apples does the caterpillar eat?-Can I please have a volunteer to come up and use
the pointer to count the number out loud for everyone to hear? Pears? Blueberries?
Strawberries? Oranges?
*What do you think happens when the Caterpillar eats all of this food? Do you think the
caterpillar should have ate all this food?
*When I get to the second to last page I will have students make a prediction: Can anyone
predict (which means to guess) what will happen to the caterpillar next after he goes inside his
cocoon?

-After the story is read, we will discuss it as a whole group.

-Questions to ask students:
*What was your favorite part of the book? Why was that your favorite part?
*What food item do you think made the hungry caterpillar get a stomach ache?
*Before I read the book, did you know that a caterpillars house was called a cocoon?
*What was your least favorite part of the book? Why was that your least favorite part?
-After the group discussion, I will allow the children to pick whichever of the two activities that
they would like to complete first at the two tables that are set up. The students can complete
both if they would like to.
-We will then start the art activity at the tables.
-At the tables, the students will receive a coffee filter, a clothes pin, a pair of googly eyes, and
markers. I will show them my completed version of the art activity that we will be doing at the
first table.
-I will model for them how I made it so that they have an example of what to do. I will tell the
students that I would first like them to color the coffee filter with the markers and also the
clothes pin if they would like.
-After, they are done with the markers and coloring I will put a spray bottle on the table. They
will spray the coffee filter two times. After, they will need to wait two minutes for the filter to
dry a little. I will set a timer.
-After, the will scrunch up the coffee filter and put the clothes pin in the middle. After they will
glue the googly eyes on their completed butterflies.
-After the children are finished, they will be asked to clean their area, wash their hands, and put
their completed projects either on the drying racks or in their mailboxes.
-Have children sit back down on circle rug
*Assistance will be provided for any child who needs it during the art activity session.
Closure (3-5 minutes)
- I hope you all enjoyed reading the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the art
activity that went along with it. When the hungry caterpillar turned into a butterfly, what
food do you think he went to eat next?
- You all made such wonderful butterflies today! Give yourself a pat on the back for such
an amazing job today. Thank you!
Student Assessment:
-Students will be orally assessed throughout the lesson on their ability to answer prediction and
comprehension questions (before, during and after story)
-One to one correspondence when the child is asked to come up and count the number of food
the caterpillar eats while using the pointer.
-Ability to use a 3-finger grasp of dominant hand to hold a writing tool and to be able to follow
two-step directions.

Differentiation :
1. Stamps can be used instead of markers if the child in unable to hold a marker. The stamps
would be an easy substitute to help the children put color onto the coffee filter.
2. Larger markers for students if they had trouble grasping.
3. For students who were good at counting, I would print off sheets that had more food items
on it so that the student could be more challenged and be able to practice their counting
skills more.
