Prepare for next weeks lecture by researching the following Control system types:

PLC- A Programmable Logic Controller is a processing unit that executes a user created
program that scans inputs, puts them through the program and works on the outputs. It
uses ladder logic for its program.

PAC- Programmable automation controller performs similar function to PLC but have multi
domain functionality and can use multiple control applications on a single platform.

DCS- A distributed control system is a control system where each part of

plant/process/machine being controlled has its own controller and they all communicate
through a network.

SCADA Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition collects data from different controllers in
a system and data which can be altered or controlled from a central point remotely.

Also, present some research on the following topics:

Industrial Ethernet Industrial Ethernet is a system of communication used in automation

and communication between controllers and systems using Ethernet protocols operating
under harsher conditions.

MODBUS is a messaging structure used to communicate between devices that was

invented in 1979.

MODBUS/TCP Is the use of the internet networking protocol to integrate the

communication of devices using MODBUS with corporate intranet as well internet and
networks to better streamline process performance with corporate goals.

ProfiBus (PA and DP) Profibus is communication protocol for automation

Profibus DP - refers to decentralized peripherals where the communication between
devices employs a master-slave concept where the master sends a signal and the slave
responds. To differentiate which slave is intended in the communication an address is
attached to each slave when the signal goes out from the master.
Profibus PA refers to process automation and is used to send communication and receive
information from measuring devices in the field. PA is characterized by its used of
intrinsically safe conduits to send power to communication units and its ability to withstand
harsh conditions.
