Lesson 4
10/16/14 at 1:00

Learning Objective:
Students will be able to understand that being safe when they visit websites is similar to staying safe in
real life. Students will learn to recognize websites that are good for them to visit. Students will be able
to recognize if they should ask an adult they trust before they visit a particular website.
Alignment with Standards:
EEDA Performance Standards:
5. Administrative candidates will explain contextual teaching and strategies that facilitate its
implementation.
6. Administrative candidates will explain strategies that encourage and support the incorporation or
cooperative learning in classroom instruction.
SSCA Elements:
Section 1: A safe and civil environment in school is necessary for students to learn and achieve high
academic standards
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This objective is appropriate because
the students have been studying safety this month. The students need to know how to be safe in and
outside of school. They have computer access when they are in school, and the lesson will help them
with using the computers properly and safely. The lesson is something that they can keep with them for
life. They learn how to be safe when they are around their parents, teachers, or even alone.
Assessment(s) of Objectives:

safety with examples or real life
scenarios
Post: Students will complete
worksheet on safety

Objective 2: Students will be able Pre: Students will review the

to recognize unsafe websites
definitions of safety and caution

Use of Formative Assessment

I will use the assessment to be
sure that students know how to
be safe when online. When
students are working on the
computer during center and in
the computer lab, I will review
with them the safety rules we
use. This information gathered
from the assessments will let me
know if I need to review and
what I need to review.

with 85% accuracy.

when using the computer

During: Students will give
examples of being safe on the
computer using a traffic light
Post: Students will play a game
called Website Traffic Light
Game about safety on the
computer.

Accommodations: For the students who need extra help I will read the directions to them and read
every question so they will know what it says. We will go over the colors of the traffic light and what
they mean so they will be able to understand. By me reading the questions on the worksheet aloud we
will all be able to be on the same page. If some go ahead, they will be able to color the entire page. I will
change some of the vocabulary on the worksheet so that students can understand. ESOL student will
have the colors to go by, and he will have questions read to him one-on one if needed.

Ask students the Essential Question: How do you stay safe when you visit websites?
Give them time to give you answers
Allow students to define safety in their own way
Allow students to turn and talk to their partners about times they were safe
Go over the traffic light using the Smart Board
Give them the real world meaning, then give them the meaning for the traffic light on the
computer Smart Board
Give out worksheet on traffic lights on the computer
Read directions and questions
Give students time to complete worksheet
Call students 1-2 tables at the time to play the Website Traffic Light Game
Give directions
a. If you think it is a green statement: take two steps
b. If you think it is yellow statement: take one step
c. If you think it is a red statement: do not move
d. Whoever moves on the red statement must sit back in seat
e. See if students can make it to the finish line

Activity Analysis:

The website traffic light game supports the lesson, because it gives students real life scenarios to
go by. They like the idea of a game and making it to the finish line so they will focus on the
activity. The students like to be creative and get up and out of their seats, this activity allowed
them to do so. For this activity no technology was used. They just used their bodies and it was
not needed.
Allowing the students to give their definition of safety, students were able to get ideas from
their peers. More than one definition of safety was gives so it covered a lot. The traffic like was
something that they knew about previously and they were able to connect to it. The activity
reached out to their interest and allowed them to be creative. The technology used for this
activity was the Smart Board. It was needed so that students could see and use the visual or the
traffic light.
