Dear Student,
I am pleased to have the opportunity to welcome you back for the 2014-2015 school year. This year, you will broaden
your mathematics knowledge and educational horizons through what I hope to be an engaging and successful year in
Algebra II Honors.
The course instruction is developed by evaluating the Math Florida State Standards and the End of Course Exams to
ensure students are receiving a consistent education with other students in the state and so they feel prepared for their
exams at the end of the course. The materials presented in the class are likely to appear on college standardized tests,
such as the SAT and ACT.
In this course we will be guided by the conviction that one learns mathematics by doing mathematics and that a
proper balance between theory and practice is essential. Essentially, you will be learning the information through a
variety of activities and manipulatives, which you will see as the school year progresses. Throughout the school year,
we will achieve the following objectives (and more!):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Explore the effects of transformations on graphs of diverse functions;

Discover families of functions and identify appropriate types of functions to model a situation;
Solve systems of equations using two or more variables;
Use the coordinate plane to extend trigonometry to model periodic phenomena. ;
Identify zeros of polynomials and make connections between zeros of polynomials and solutions
of polynomial equations.;
6. Identify different ways of collecting data and the role that randomness and careful design play in
the conclusions that can be drawn.
If at any time you have questions or concerns you would like to discuss with me, feel free to contact me by phone
(Insert School Number and extension) or e-mail (k.adamson@ufl.edu).
It is expected that you have certain materials with you every day during class. This will include a calculator, paper,
pencil, notebook, graph paper, textbook and assignments. Make sure you come prepared to class each and every day.
Above all, make sure you are coming to class with a positive attitude and you are ready to work and to learn!
All of the school rules and regulations will be followed. Please be sure to see these in the Student Code of Conduct.
Your grade for each nine-weeks will be comprised of the following: announced tests, announced and unannounced
quizzes, homework, writing assignments, your notebook, participation and a semester exam. Tests and quizzes will
comprise fifty percent, homework/written assignments will comprise twenty percent, participation ten percent and
the semester exam twenty percent. Occasionally we will have random material checks, which will be counted as half
a homework grade.
Please discuss this letter with your parents and have it signed and returned to me by Monday, August 27 th.
Cordially,
Katelyn Adamson
