Lesson # __2__
This lesson is developmentally appropriate because it is directly aligned with the second grade standard
for writing. They are to recall their favorite fall activity and write about it. This writing prompt involves
prerequisite knowledge of fall and the things the students do during fall. It will test their skill in writing
and the ability to recall an event.
Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)
Objective 1
After reading the story Now
Its Fall as a class, the
students will write about their
favorite fall activity and give
at least three reasons
justifying why that particular
activity is their favorite.
Use of Formative
Assessment
(TWS section 7)
How will you use the
assessment data to inform
future instruction?
If students are successful:
incorporate a more indepth writing prompt that
requires them to recall
information from a text or
story, not an experience.
If students struggled:
small group to review
concepts; peer tutoring
and more practice writing.

Procedures: Include motivation techniques, grouping, instructional strategies (steps in the lesson), probing questions*,
and lesson closure. Refer to rubrics for specific items that should be included in every lesson plan.
*Procedures must include probing questions that will be asked during the lesson. Probing questions focus student
attention on important elements of the lesson and help them think more deeply about the concepts.
Grouping: Whole class for reading and then individual for writing
Probing Question: What season are we in? What happens during this season? What is your favorite fall activity and
why?
Motivation: Read the story Now Its Fall by Lois Lenski; write about favorite fall activity and illustrate
Procedures:
1. Have students move to the carpet by tables
2. Ask: Can anyone tell me what season we are in? What are some things we know about this season?
3. Introduce the book: Now Its Fall by Lois Lenski
4. Read the book stopping to ask questions throughout. Have the students turn and talk. Continue reading.
5. Once the story is finished, ask the students what are some of the things we learned from this story? What
activities were listed that we didnt mention? What was your favorite part of the story?
6. Have students return to seats by calling rows or color squares.
7. Explain the writing prompt following the reading while passing out the My Fall Story template: what is your
favorite fall activity and why? Give me at least three sentences explaining why this is your favorite fall
activity.
8. I will give the students a suitable amount of time to write. As they are writing I will be walking around
observing and helping with any spelling issues or writing issues.
9. Once they have written an appropriate response, I will check their responses and then allow them to illustrate
their favorite fall activity in the provided space on the template if time permits.
10. After students finish the activity, have several children share their finished products.

Activity Analysis: (must support TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)
Identify at least two activities you plan to use in this lesson and explain why you are planning these specific activities.
In your explanation include the following prompts:
How each activity (instructional strategy) supports the lesson objective(s).
How the activities stem from student characteristics, needs, and/or contextual factors identified in TWS 1.
What technology you will use to implement the activities, how the technology will be used, and who will use
the technology. If you do not plan to use any form of technology, provide a clear rationale for its omission.
Activity 1: The students will write what their favorite fall activity is using the My Fall Story writing template and
then illustrate the activity in the space provided. This activity supports the lesson objective because the students are
writing a response based off of recalling information from experiences.
Activity 2: The reading of Now Its Fall by Lois Lenski. By reading this story, they are able to witness what types of
activities occur during fall and begin thinking of their favorite fall activity. This will be a whole class reading in which I
will ask questions before and during. By answering these questions, they are engaging in the lesson and expressing
the ability to gather information from provided sources. Both the reading activity and the writing activity are directly
related to objective because both activities require the students to recall information from experiences (writing about
favorite fall activity) and gather information from provided resources (answering questions about the book).
Technology: Since this was a writing response following a reading, there was no technology needed.
