Course Reflection Essay

My favorite quest myth is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This is of my favorites
because I had read some of the books growing up and they really interested me. The books had
great imagery especially since I had a better imagination as a kid. These books had very many
characters. The one that I associate myself with is probably the Olympian, Apollo. Apollo is the
god of healing who taught man medicine, the god of light, and the god of truth. I can relate all
of these to me. Firstly, the god of healing. This relates to me because I want to be a physical
therapist. This occupation, will of course, require me to help heal people. Secondly, he is the
god of light. The way that pertains to me is that I am a very optimistic person. I see this as being
a bright person. Lastly, he is the god of truth. No one tells the truth all of the time but I think
that Im very truthful. Since Im Christian, lying is a sin. Less sin is best for me.
In my opinion, all quest myths are all almost the same storyline. They start off on an
adventure then they have many different experiences during the quest. After that, they end up
reaching their goal and are rewarded. I think our life is just like a quest. A person is born and
throughout their life, there are many adventures along the way. All the way from playing
outside in the woods as a kid to partying as a college student. Life is full of adventures. Just like
Ricky Bobby says on Talladega Nights: I dont really know why Im here, I guess Im here just
here for the ride. I agree with that phrase. After all the adventures are over, people die once
its their time to go. I relate that back to my religion. Once someone has lived their life, if they

repent their sins and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they will be welcomed to heaven.
Many different religions could probably relate to a quest as well.
The difference between Percy Jackson and my life is all the fiction or figurative things.
He is a young kid that has a very important task to fulfill, which is related to me since I am going
through college right now at this point in my life. He goes through many adventures and hard
times during his journey. Once again, just like college. Then finally he finishes his task and is
rewarded with peace. Just like me when I get my degree and I can stop stressing about more
schooling.
Also along this whole journey that Percy is going through, he is not doing it alone. He
has friends, family, and people that care about him helping the whole way. That is exactly how
my life is because every one of those want the best for me and support me one hundred
percent. Not only is there people that care, but people that try to bring you down. That is the
people that do not care about you or may even be jealous at how much drive a person has to
succeed.
My process of writing is like myth because as Im writing this, all the aspects of the story
are happening. My roommate is encouraging me. Saying that I can get it done. On the other
hand, my other roommate (brother) is saying that I wont get it done. This is like the myth too
because me and Percy prove people wrong about what we can do. Another way how my
writing process is like a myth is that there are many ups and downs. One moment the writing
will come easy and the next moment I cannot think of anything to come up with. Thats how

writing class helps. The more a person writes, the quality of the writing will become better.
More quantity could be an outcome as well but the quality is the main target. That is one way
writing is similar to this quest. The journey you go through can either help or not. Since Mrs.
Voltz is the teacher, it helps. I have become a more creative writer. Not only that, but I am a
more diverse writer now. The journey can make or break you.
Just like Percy Jackson, he adapted and succeeded his goal. All the writing projects that
we have written this semester in this class have all had a similar pattern that repeats. The notes
and planning lists, writing groups responses, drafts and revisions of major projects, ICWs and
blogs, our groups 49r Quest. All of these papers have shaped me to be a better writer. They
have made me a multi-faceted writer. The more subjects I write about, the better writer that I
can be. The pattern is that my work keeps getting better and better. That is, if I put time and
effort into my writings. That is the biggest concern for me personally. It may be for other
people as well. The more time and effort that goes into the writing, almost ten out of ten times,
the writing will be a better quality. With writing all of these things, it makes writing become
easier. For me, writing will never be easy but practice makes perfect. Well, at least better.
One of the projects that keep cropping up is my personal narrative. This was one of the
easier projects to write because it was a personal experience. The narrative made me realize
that going into detail and explaining yourself can help make the paper better overall. It also
make a better experience for the reader that doesnt know the story. I wrote the narrative
through my eyes so writing many details was crucial in helping the reader imagine what was

happening. Imagery is a big part of a piece of writing. The better experience the reader has
reading the paper, they can relate to what is going on.
The areas where I was like Sisyphus, pushing the same rock up the hill over and over
and over again was probably the revisions of major projects. I would keep changing one part
and then that made me change another. Then I would reread the paper and wasnt satisfied. I
would keep second guessing what would be good writing. As long as I had solid vocabulary,
correct spelling and grammar, and well-spoken sentences, then I felt that is all I needed. That is
not always the case but for most projects that is all that I needed.
The thing that causes tension in my writing is my ability to overthink. I want to make my
papers like a scholarly writer and I cant do that. That is not where my best writing is expressed.
Sometimes simple sentences is all a person needs. The limits that I struggle with are vocabulary.
I tend to repeat words in my writings. In my opinion, I need to have a better variety of
vocabulary in my pieces of writings.
My reflection has helped with new ideas. I have spotted many weaknesses in my
writings reviewing my papers. Now that I have become better and know what to look for, it
makes it easier to edit my papers. Also with peer revisions, I can get others opinions. I can learn
other specific things about my writing that I didnt know before. Other views are always a great
way of helping to point out flaws in my writing.
I wouldnt say that writing has helped me deal with the injustice of the world. I would
say that reading different styles and genres in class made me want to read more on my own. I

keep up with all the current world news by reading articles instead of watching the news.
Whether it be political, world news, etc. Reading does help a lot with expanding my vocabulary.
That is a weak point in my writing so it is helping out greatly. With all of the readings in class, I
couldnt exactly pinpoint one that helped me particularly with my writing. I would have to a
little bit more digging the class readings. Some have affected my writing more than others. All
have gotten me to consider different ways I should write. Many of the readings or short stories
have very unique ways of writings. Once again, these just get me to realize that there are so
many styles of writings out there.
My best piece of writing would probably be my personal narrative. Since it was a
personal experience, I could easily put my own thoughts and ideas into it. It was also a really
fun time, so it was really easy what happened at those moments in time. I also got input from
my friends that were with me during that time. I could write in great detail.
Now onto the topic of my portfolio grade. I believe that should get an A. I think that
this a suitable grade because in my opinion, you get what you work for. I have worked very hard
on all of my projects. Once my portfolio is finished, there will evidence that I worked hard and
took time and effort on it. One grades anothers Journey by looking at their pieces of work in
chronological order. There should be evidence that I made progress as a writer. My writing skills
will be much improved and are continuing to getting better.
