Philosophy of Classroom Management

As a new teacher I would like to create a welcoming environment for my students and I
believe this begins with classroom management. Kauchak & Eggen (2014) tell us that
creating a safe and inviting place for my students will promote learning. Having the proper
environment is of great importance because without it students will not able to learn as much as
they can since they will be worried about their safety. Establishing rules for the class on the first
day and sending letters home to parents stating my mission for the students will show both
students and parents that I care about their education.
As I begin teaching in my own classroom I am committed to provide a safe and
welcoming setting for all my students in order encourage learning. I believe in teaching the
curriculum to my students in many different ways in order to keep them interested and engaged.
Taking different approaching in my teaching techniques will motivate students to bounce ideas
of each other if they are working in groups. I want my students in small groups to discuss topics
among each other and them share it with the entire class. I feel that students will respect me if I
stay neutral and consistent. I also feel that being even-tempered can encourage students to come
speak to me without any apprehensions.
I feel that it is very important to call each student by name, since this is another way of
opening a door of good dialogue. My desire as a teacher is to have my students feel safe asking
me questions about any assignments, lecture discusses, or anything I might be able to help them
succeed in school. I want my students to learn and be motivating about the curriculum they are
being taught. I believe in including students to help make some choices on some classroom rules
in order to help them feel that they have influence their learning environment.
I believe that rules in the classroom should be addressed on the first day of school in
order to establish a safe environment. Keeping my rules short, clear, and easy for all my students
to understand can help erase a confusion that may be lingering in the classroom. I also feel that
staying consistent with daily procedure can set up a classroom for success. Over planning rather

than just planning can help if there are any hiccups thought the day. For elementary students
writing down our daily schedule for all to see can help the class stay on task. I also feel that
keeping parents informs of what students are learning can inspire an open dialogue.
In asking my mentor about what she believed was her philosophy of classroom
management, I learned that she strongly believes in positive reinforcement. She encourages me
not to focus on solely the misbehavior of a classroom but rather on the good behavior in order to
shift the dynamics to become a positive one.
In conclusion, the most important aspect of creating a productive learning environment
goes back to classroom management. My goal is to create classroom that my students will want
to learn and feel inspired. I also believe in expecting the best from each student and setting
realistic goals with them that can lead to succeed.
