* Today, we are going to be looking at one of the different


region of Alberta. Can anyone tell me what a region is? ( An
area of land that is divided by certain characteristics that it
has)
* Show 1st segment of video

Ask: What is an ecosystem?


Answer: A complete and balanced natural area including the
vegetation and the animals
Ask: What is a region?
Ask: Has anyone ever visited the Boreal Forest Region of
Alberta?
Ask: What do you think Boreal means? (North)
Ask: What are some things that you think that you would find in
the Boreal Forest?

* Watch 2nd segment of video


* Ask: How much of Alberta is covered by the Boreal Forest?
(About half)
* Ask: What were some of the things that the video discussed as
being part of the Boreal Forest Region? ( Evergreen Trees, Free
Roaming Bison, Wolverines, Insect Eating Pitcher Plants)
* What are some other things that you think might live in this
area?
* Watch 3rd video segment
* Ask: What is a Moraine?
* Answer:Mounds left behind when the glaciers and ice sheets
melted
* Pull names from Popsicle sticks to come up to the smart board
and select an item
* Discuss why each item selected would be a part of this
ecosystem
* Observe student participation in discussion
* Observe students conclusions drawn from video and activity

* Students pull out textbooks and turn to page 98


* Read pages 98 and 99, pull popsicle sticks to determine reading
order
* Ask: What are some differences between living on the prairies
( 10 min)
and living in the Forest Region?
* These are all questions that we will learn the answers to over the
next unit. In your partners, come up with one more question
that you have about the Boreal Forest Region and write it down.
* Observe students reading a paragraph orally
