Grade and Topic:

4th Grade Science

Length of Lesson: 3 hours

Mentor Teacher:

UM-Lambuth

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The students will research information on the water cycle using the computer. Then the student will
conduct a power-point on the lesson followed by an activity online.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
The learner will research and understand more about the water cycle by conducting research online from
a list of questions provided.

Once the research has been conducted the students will get in pairs of 2 and organize a power-point about their
research.
Once the power-point has been conducted the students will present them to the class. After the presentations are
done the students will work on an activity online about The Water Cycle.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
GLE 0407.8.1 Recognize the major components of the water cycle.

90407.8.1 Prepare a model that illustrates the basic features of the water cycle.

90407.8.3 Use an illustration to predict and draw conclusions about how weather and climate affect the
water cycle.

SPI 0407.8.1 Identify the basic features of the water cycle and describe their importance to life on earth.

MATERIALS:
Computer
Sheet of questions provided by teacher
Power-Point
Pencil
The following website:
http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/pd/oceans_weather_climate/media/watercycle.swf
(the website listed above is an interactive activity to recap what the students have learned during the lesson)
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The concept of this lesson is for the students to fully understand how the water cycle works.
The student must also learn how to effectively use Power-Point to present to the class.

The students must know how to move throughout a website and a computer to effectively succeed in the
assignments.
The students have previously had a lesson about the Water Cycle to introduce them to the assignment.
This lesson is the end of the lessons learning about the water cycle. We are using the power-point
presentations to bring a closure to the lesson.

In the case that students may not be able to use the internet or have disabilities, the activity may need to
be modified in the future.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: I will bring the previous lesson to the attention of the students by asking them what they
remember about the intro to the water cycle. After I ask a few questions to get their interest I will begin
the current lesson.
Procedures:
Teacher Procedures
Day One: Prior to Computers (15 Minutes):
1. Recap with questions on the intro to the water cycle
previously taught.
2. Given students proper instructions on how to act at the
computer. Give specific instructions for the assignment.
3. Hand out research questions for the students to fill out
and complete.
4. Send students individually to computers to complete
research.
At the Computers (30 minutes):
1. Have the students open the browser
2. Make sure the students go to a search engine and type
in the research questions.
3. Walk around and make sure the students are correctly
researching the information. Make sure the students are on
task and working quietly.
After Computers (15 minutes):
1.Instruct students to go back to their seats with the
research paper
2. Discuss the questions and answers with the class and
make sure the correct answers were documented
3. Write the answers on the board to make sure they know
the right answers for the project tomorrow
Day Two: Prior to Computers (15 minutes):
1.Go over the research again with the class so it is fresh on
their minds
2. Put the students in to pairs of two and send them to a
computer
At Computers (1 hour):
1.Have students open power-point and guide them to
compose a new document.
2. Once the new document is composed they will begin to
make their power-point (There will be 5 slides on the
information they gained from the previous research
conducted).
3. Students will work in pairs until the power-point is
completed
4. Once the assignment is completed it they will save the
document as Water Cycle PPT [Insert Names]
After Computers (30 minutes):
1.Once the assignments are completed the students will
save it to the computer and go back to their seats.
2. The teacher will then save the PPTs from each
computer to a USB drive.
3. The teacher will call each pair up to present their PPTs

Students Procedures
Day One: Prior to Computers (15 Minutes):
1. Comply to answering questions of the previous lesson.
2. Take paper with research questions and pencils to the
computer after given proper instruction.

At the Computers (30 minutes):

1.Open browser
2.Go to a search engine and type in research questions
3.Students will work quietly and comply to the classroom
rules
4.Write down answers on paper
After Computers (15 minutes):
1.Go back to seats
2.Answer the research questions with the teacher
3.Make sure the correct answers are documented on the
research paper for tomorrow.

Day Two: Prior to Computers (15 minutes):

1.Go over the research with the teacher
2. Get into the pairs that the teacher instructed and go to a
computer.
At Computers (1 hour):
1.Students open power-point
2. Compose new document and complete 5 slides for the
presentation
3. Work in pairs to complete assignment.
4. Once the assignment is completed it they will save the
document as Water Cycle PPT [Insert Names]

After Computers (30 Minutes):

1.Complete the assignment, save to computer, and go back
to seats.
2.Teacher will save PPTs on the USB
3. Each pair will be called up to present to the class
4. The students will then go back to the computers one

to the class
4. The teacher will wrap up presentations and ask the
students to go back to the computer one more time to
complete and interactive activity.
At Computers (15 minutes):
1.Students will go to the computer and go to the instructed
website (listed above and will be given to the students)
2.Once the students are on the website they will click on
NSTA Interactive: Water Cycle Pathways.
3. Students will complete activity and go back to seats.

more time for an interactive activity.

At Computers (15 minutes):

1.Go to computer and get on instructed website
2. Once on website the students will complete the
interactive activity
3. Once the activity is completed the students will go back
to their seats.

Closure: Once the students are back in their seats after the interactive activity, I will go over the powerpoints that were presented. The power-points will be graded on completion, accuracy, and participation.
I will go over the interactive activity and ask the students if they have any questions. If they have no
questions, that will conclude the lesson.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
I will grade the PPT with a rubric (provided below)
I will also give points for participation, compliance, presentations, and the interactive activity.
