Skittles Term Project

Report Introduction

As a final grade in this Statistics course, my Statistics teacher Justin Christiansen

gave us a project: perform a process we have learned in class. In this project I will have
the chance to organize and analyze data. I will also be drawing up conclusions and
using confidence intervals. I will present our finding in an organized paper. We will
be editing these assignments and adding stuff in. This project will be uploaded to my
eportfolio at the end of the semester. To show our knowledge and skills we have
learn throughout the semester. This will be a signature assignment for this math
class.
Organizing and Displaying Categorical Data: Colors

Number of each color of Candy

Purple 274, 18.75%
Orange 278, 19.03%
Yellow 289, 19.78%
Green- 300, 20.53%
Red 320, 21.9%
Total 1,461

The finding kind of threw me off because for the most part. When I get skittles to
eat I get a lot more Yellows and Oranges. This is not the case for our sample size. When
we observe the yellow and Orange colors are at in the bottom 3 colors per bag. As for the
graphs there is not much change to with the visual so that was not a shock it is kind of
what I had expect to see just by looking at the numbers. My own bag of skittles was
pretty spot on with the entire sample size.

Observing the data First thing you notice for the most part the data looks to be
very close to each having X amount of Skittles. Surprisingly enough they do and but the
was an outlier. Also notice on the histogram that its not a perfect bell shape but does sort
of resemble one. By looking at the data before doing the graphs I thought my Histogram
would have a better looking shape then it does, but my Boxplot does look like I though.

Reflection
Categorical data (also known as frequency or qualitative data.)
Things are grouped according to some common property (ies) and the number of
members of the group is recorded (e.g., males and females, vehicle types).
A good graph to start representing categorical data is a bar graph. This is a good way to
show the sizes of categories. Pie charts are best used with categorical data to help us see
what percentage of the whole each category constitutes.

Quantitative Data
Data, which are measurable or quantifiable, such as length, weight, etc. Stem and leaf
plot graphs are used with quantitative data to display shapes of distributions, and also to
organize numbers and make them more comprehensible. Boxplots graphs help you see
the main features of a group of data, i.e. how the data is spread out. Any type of boxplot
is a graph of the five-number summary. A type of calculation used in quantitative data is
the 5 number summary, the minimum and max score, Q1-the median of the lower half of
all scores, Q3-the median of the upper half of all scores, and the maximum score, with
suspected outliers plotted individually.
