Unit Title: Public Art

Duration: 6 weeks
Design Context:
The term public art refers to works of art in any media that has been planned and executed with the specific
intention of being sited or staged in the physical public domain, usually outside and accessible to all. You
are to identify a site or area within the school or local area where a piece of artwork could be created. How
could your design bring colour, new life or a new look to a part of the school? This is graphic design project
that will use graphic visualisations to imagine your work. You are to research, design and create a
piece that has a positive message that uses do-it-yourself culture (DIY) to change your environment or
envisage change. The power of visualisation to see potential and opportunity in places it doesnt exist or
isn't associated.

MYP Statement of Inquiry:

Public art is defined by its variety and uniqueness. You will never see two pieces of public art that are the same
unless its intended so. Public art cannot be defined by size, shape, texture, form or style because artists usually use
what they have to create something new. Public art often is at its best when it makes something dull, mundane and

Content/Tasks
A. Inquiring and Analysing
Add all your work to your digital portfolio (Weebly). Use print screen to document all your
work. Include research, initial ideas, anything that catches your eye and importantly,
mistakes. It will represent evolution of your project ideas. You never know where an idea will
begin, how it will develop and where it may end up.
1. Watch Exit through the gift shop: What does this mean to you? Is it a hoax? What
questions does it pose? Is it art? Who is the joke on? Write a review and comment on this
on your site.
2. Comments on the difference between cave paintings /design/art /graffiti/ advertising?
3. Research Public Art that inspires you. Gather images that you like and find interesting. At
least 10. Why do they appeal to you? Comment on each one and why you like it. (See
links below)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------B. Developing Ideas

1. Create a Mind Map about Public Art using Power Point
What is public Art? Why is it important?
What are common themes in successful pieces? Contrast? Colour? Nature Vs Man made?
Juxtaposition? Social commentary? Location? What do you think makes a successful public
art piece? What are you the designer trying to do when they create these pieces of work?
What do you want to celebrate? Who will be the audience?

2. Write a clear design specification for what you hope to do? What will be your concept?
(main idea behind the piece)

3. Choose a location within the school or that is familiar to you for your work to be located and
take 8 pictures of it.
4. Complete a short essay on a chosen artist of your choice whose work is displayed publically.
Do not choose Banksy look up other street artists

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------C. Creating the Solution

1. Compile a set of design concept sketches/images for your Public art proposal. Use
visualisation to tell your storey (Photoshop). Experiment with a variety of ideas. You must
show all your attempts and progress of your design using print screen. Upload these as
you go along. Mistakes are good!
2. Create final Images and presentation on the piece, with a set of photos, visualisations and
explanation of it
