MISSION
To assist low-income youth and families with young children to
acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary
to choose nutritionally sound diets and to contribute to their personal
development and the improvement of total family diet

after the recognition of

poverty and
malnutrition due to
limited access to
healthful food choices

Trained paraprofessionals (peer


educators) and volunteers from
the local community under the
supervision of county extension
family and consumer science
professionals direct teaching in
groups or through one on one
sessions; mailings and telephone
teaching to complement other
teaching methods; mass media
efforts to develop understanding,
awareness, and involvement in
the educational program; and
development and training of
volunteers to assist with direct
teaching of adults and youth
