Practicum
October 31, 2014
Hook or essential question
Learning plan, activities, planned
questions, (include time allotted to specific
activities)

What is a verb?
1. Students review and then take their
vocabulary quiz. (~20 minutes or
more)
2. Collect any extra credit the students
may have done. (2 minutes)
3. Talk about the three types of verbs. (2
minutes)
a. Action verb
b. Linking verb
c. Helping verb
4. Define an action verb and give them
examples. (5-10 minutes)
a. An action verb tells what
action someone or something
is performing.
b. Remind them that verbs do not
have to end in -ing.
c. Some examples: eat, throw,
sleeping, carving, watching...
5. Ask the class to give examples of
verbs and write them on the board. (5
minutes)
a. Have them give verbs that end
in -ing and then some that do
not.
6. Game Time!
a. Students should be in two
teams.
b. Have verbs ready on pieces of
paper for the students to
choose.
i.
Review words first.
c. One person from each team
will choose a verb and they
can either act it out or draw it
on the board (try to use the
SmartBoard).

d. For each one they get right, the

team gets one point.
e. After each verb has been
guessed, each team will come
up with a sentence using the
verb.
f. Each person on the team has to
go before anyone else gets a
second chance.
Differentiation (Above, on, or below grade
level)

All on the same level

Closure

Have the students say what a verb is and give

a few examples.
Homework: Make a list of five verbs

Reflection

Before class started, my mentor teacher told

me that the class had a surprise for me. She
read a short story/paragraph that the students
had all written together describing a witch
named Mrs. Wichita. They did it as an
activity to review adjectives and it was so
good! I told them that they did an awesome
job and they were all very excited about me
hearing it.
Despite two students being absent and two of
them having an early dismissal, this lesson
plan went very well. Once they got the grasp
of an action verb, they did a great job. One
student kept giving nouns so I had to review
the definitions again.
They also loved the game because they could
either draw or act out the verb. Most of them
chose to draw out the verb and the other
students really liked guessing the verbs. It
definitely helped that we reviewed the words
before we started the game; that really helped
them with guessing the words because some
of the drawings the students did were hard to
figure out.
