RNS-E Installation Instructions and Photo's

A couple words of warning to begin with, if you are paranoid on minor scratches
on your interior, please don't do this. Most likely you will end up with one or a few
if youre not careful Likewise, if you are afraid of applying force when pulling parts
out, please don't do this. Some of the parts are fitted quite tightly, and need a
certain amount of force to unplug
Do this and follow my instructions at your own risk

I attached protective covering to everything around the install to stop any damage

First thing to do is remove the standard head unit, insert the keys and pull out,
disconnect all cables.

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Once removed the trim round the buttons pulls off easily

Next remove all the buttons and cup holder, unclip and unplug cables

The holder for the switches is used in the new din cage

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Next step is to remove the Climate control unit, give it a tug at both sides and it
will release you are then left with the empty cage

Lift up the gear stick surround, Remove the grab handles from both sides, 3 bolts
each side, One Allen and 2 8mm bolts

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Pull out the storage area trim from behind ashtray, you can replace the ashtray
with a shelf for added space if required. This also allows the use of the ashtray
illumination wire to be used in the upper storage tray

Remove glove box & side panel to gain access to left Din cage bolts, 7 x 8mm
bolts to remove glove box, Deactivate passenger airbag before removal.

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Remove trim under steering column to gain access to right din cage bolts, 3 x
8mm Bolts to remove trim, unclip at the top

You are now ready to remove the single din cage from the dash, 6 T25 screws
and 2 x 8mm bolts to remove

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

I found removing the bracket below on the passenger side helped when removing
the din cage 2x 8mm bolts

Now this bit is not easy as the din cage was never meant to come out this way. I
found twisting it too the right then down helped. Its very tight and needs a fair
amount of force. Take a bit of time at it and it will come out eventually, you will be
left with an empty hole

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Installing the double din cage is just as difficult, but with some patients it will go
in, once in put all the screws and bolts back in but don't tighten just yet

Next I put all the new switches and storage tray in then put the trim panel on.
Connect illumination cable to storage tray if ashtray is being removed (Optional)

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Don't connect the cables to the RNS-E just yet, carefully slide the unit in till it
locks into place

Check the gaps around the trim and RNS-E are equal and tighten all the visible
screw's, Remove the RNS -E and tighten the two screws behind it then connect
cables and refit, If you have a diversity antenna it needs connecting to the
antenna adapter in the spare hole.

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

If you choose to fit the storage tray in place of the ashtray you need to fit it now
before the grab handles are refitted, It will look like this

At this point refit the grab handles but don't tighten the screw's up, you will need
some movement in the handles to refit the Climate Control unit

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

The next stage depends on weather you have purchased a double din climate
control unit or modified your existing one. I modified mine as I didn't like the
450.00 price tag for a double din version

First I made a template of the existing unit then cut it down to fit the gap

I then marked out the size on the unit over the protective masking tape using the
template , so it was ready to cut

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

I used a dermal with the flexible shaft to cut the majority of the plastic away.
Cutting tool, sanding tool then some fine sandpaper and block to smooth off

Using the masking tape stops and scratches on the front of the unit.

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

You need to take some time doing this, and keep trying it in the car until it fits
properly

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

After a final fitment check, connect the cables and refit the climate control.
Tighten the grab handles up and refit the glove box and steering column trims

External Shark Fin GPS/GSM Antenna

You will need to run an extension cable from the RNS-E to the rear of the car
Drill a hole in the ro of ! Do this at your own risk

Fakra Extension Cable

GPS/GSM/Diversity Antenna 8P0 035 503 L

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Start By Marking the location of the hole on the roof, from the rear to center hole I
drilled was 5 inches and left gutter to center was 20 inches (Approx)
I protected the roof to stop it getting scratched by bits of metal

Remove the interior trim which gives you enough room to get at the location

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Feed the fakra extension cable through ready to plug in

Again I used flexible plastic to get the cable through the headlining

After a final measure and alignment check drill the hole to the correct size.
I painted the bare metal with rust guard and touchup paint

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

Check antenna fits correctly and bolt into place

Once secured connect the cable and refit the trim.

If you just want to fit the standard GPS antenna, plug into RNS -E and site on top
of dash board.

Copyright Bryan Holmes (bah35uk@ntlworld.com)

It should now look something like this, hopefully with no damage and everything
working as normal.
It took me 6 hours from start to finish,
Some coding may need to be done to the unit to get it to function correctly in the
car, by setting up the unit and the CAN BUS.
