Rhetorical Reading Exercise

1. What We Are Doing: This literacy narrative assignment is asking us to reflect

on our past experiences with reading and writing throughout our lives. After we
have reflected, we are going to look at how our experiences have shaped us a
writer and reader. Having this history and thinking about our past should give us
an idea of why we write the way we do and why we have the feelings about
reading and writing. Also, if opinions were changed by experiences in the past we
should clearly be able to identify that by the end of this assignment.
2. What I Already Know:
-The MLA format sounds very familiar we used it for all of our papers in high
school
-Times New Roman- 12 point font is very familiar to me because it is like the
standard for writing papers and assignments that are going to be turned in for a
grade
-Sensory detail sounds very familiar to me, we have had to use it before in papers
previously. This type of detail adds another level of excitement and
entertainment for the reader
-I already know that dialogue should sound just like a real live conversation, if it
does not sound believable then the reader will get bored quickly and not want to
continue reading
-Vivid detail, which is a boarder term that sensory that I have above, is very
useful in all types of writing because it makes a story, letter or essay more
entertaining, more relatable and just overall more readable
3. What I Need to Know/Learn:
-I have never had to do a reading exercise like this one, which is being done on
the assignment sheet, but I do think that it will really help. It makes you slow
down and understand all aspects of an assignment.
-I need to learn how to stay genuine with my writing because well into the paper
I stop being genuine and just go with what sounds good. By the end I just end up
not caring.
