PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON PLAN


Activity: LEVEL # _3_ WEEK # __35__
GRADE LEVEL & NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 5th grade, 36 students
TIME: 30 mins
EQUIPMENT: 9 tees, 8 bats, at least 30 softy softballs, 4 big cones, 8 regular cones, 1 green cone
OBJECTIVES:
To hit a ball
To be able to field softball grounders and fly balls
To understand different rolls of softball. (hitting and fielding)
To catch and throw a ball
CALIFORNIA PE STANDARDS:
Introductory Activity:
4.5 Explain the elements of warm-up and cool-down activities.
5.6 Acknowledge orally the contributions and strengths of others.

Fitness Activity:
3.6 Perform flexibility exercises that will stretch particular muscle areas for given
physical activities.
5.6 Acknowledge orally the contributions and strengths of others.

Lesson Focus:
1.1 Perform simple small-group balance stunts by distributing weight and base of
support.

PART 1: INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY (2-3 mins):

. Jog around the teaching area

three times, find another new partner and freeze.

PART 2: FITNESS DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY (8-12 mins):

. Forming teams
. Walk around the teaching area.
. Teacher says freeze. Get toe to toe with three
people closest to you, making a team of four.
When you have your team of four, sit down.
. When I say go, your team will walk to a cone
and line up behind one of the cones. (one group
per cone)
. Scavenger Hunt
. The teacher will give an activity paper to each
team.
. The team must stay together. When complete,
the students must go back to their cone and sit
down.
1. Run around and touch 3 walls.
2. Crab walk to the center of the court
wherever you are.
3. Bear Crawl to the green cone.
4. Find someone out of your group wearing
glasses and everyone give them a high
five.
5. Skip from one end of the court to the other.
6. 15 jumping jacks
7. Get into plank position and count to 10

8. With your group, go up to Mrs. Martin and
say Good morning with any accent.
PART 3: LESSON FOCUS (15-20 mins):
Activity
. Hitting

Tee Practice

Teaching Hints
. Once students are lined up back at the cone:
walk your line out toward the other end of the
court until the teacher says stop.
. Make sure you have your own personal space.
. Everyone raise your dominant hand.
. Everyone turn your opposite site toward the
teacher.
. You are going to hold an invisible bat with your
hands.
. Your dominant hand is on top of the other.
. Keep your hands by your ears.
. When you are ready to swing step your front foot
towards the wall, pretend the ball is in front of
you belly button, and swing.
. Practice swinging, bringing your hands to wear
the ball would be.
. You will do the same with a real bat.
. Make sure your bottom hand touches the knob at
the bottom of the bat. Line your belly button up
to the top of the tee. Take one big step back.
Your side will face the wall.
. Keep your hands close to your ears.
. The foot closest to the wall will step towards the
wall while you bring your hands towards the ball.
. Make sure to hit the ball with the barrel of the
bat. (show what barrel of the bat is)
. In your teams, stand by your assigned tee.
. One person will hit, one will catch (place ball on
tee), and fielder #1 and fielder #2 gather the balls
hit by the batter.
. The fielders will stand behind the hitter and
catcher and retrieves the balls hit by their group.
. The hitter will hit three balls and then rotate.
(hitter to fielder #2, fielder #2 to fielder #1, fielder
#1 to catcher, catcher to hitter)
. Safety Rules:
1. Hitter waits for catcher to step away from
the tee.

2. No pushing other group members.
3. Make sure it is safe to retrieve a ball.
4. Wait for your turn.

PART 4: GAME ACTIVITY (5 mins):


Activity
. Over the Line

Teaching Hints
. Teams 1-4 will hit
. Teams 5-8 will spread out in the teaching area
and be the fielders.
. One person will hit at a time.
. One ball per batter.
. If the ball gets passed the other team or if the
ball is not fielded cleanly, the other team gets a
point.
. Throw the ball in.
. If you hit the wall or curtain there is not points.
. Switch when the teacher claps their hands three
times.
. The team with the most points wins.
