OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among
them.

Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule. [C, CN, R, V]
Compare 2-D shapes to parts of 3-D objects in the environment. [C, CN, V]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will
1. Know the names of the basic shapes
2. Distinguish between organic and geometric shapes
3. Find shapes in objects in the classroom
4. Complete a shapes worksheet

Learning Activity #1

Load smart board activity

Print worksheet copies for the whole class
Introduction (5 minutes)
Watch The Shapes Song (about triangles, rectangles, circles, ovals
and squares)

Time

Students stay seated at their desks while watching

Pull up smart board activity and say: now that weve refreshed our
memories on the different shapes, were going to play a matching
game, where we match the words with their shapes. Ill do the first
one. Draw a line on the smart board from the word square to the
picture of the square.
Body (20 minutes)
Smart board activities

5 minutes

Time

Call on students one by one to come up and draw a line from the
words on the right side of the screen to their matching shapes on the
left side of the screen.
15 minutes
Once this is done, go to the next screen, which has a variety of
organic and geometric shapes, and an organic shapes circle and a
geometric shapes circle. Discuss how the shapes that have names
(circle, square, oval, rectangle and triangle amongst others) are called
geometric shapes. All other shapes are organic shapes, because they

can be drawn however one likes and they dont have a name. Call on
students one by one to drag the shapes to either the geometric shape
circle or the organic shape circle. Have them say the name of the
shape they are dragging (if it is geometric) and have them turn to the
class after dragging the object to explain their choice of dragging the
shape to either organic or geometric.
Teacher Notes:

Differentiation

Assessment: Observe if the students understand the difference

between organic and geometric shapes
Differentiation: Allow students to pick the shapes they want to drag

Learning Activity #2

Finding Shapes in the classroom

Say: Shapes are all around us. Lets all find shapes in this classroom.
Ill start. I see a.

5 minutes

Have students look around the classroom for one minute and then
share one by one.

Assessment: Can the students find shapes in the classroom?

Differentiation: Allowing students a minute to look around
Closure (15 minutes)
Shapes Worksheet
Hand out a shapes worksheet of a house for the students to complete
(they need to color the circles, rectangles, square and triangles a
certain color)
