Problem Solving
(logic)

Student could tell you that

the steeper (higher
numeric value) the faster
you will be going down on
the slide
Students plotted the
points correctly and
demonstrated they
understood the process of
plotting points to find the
correct answer to the
slope, when finding the
difference.
Students showed all of
their work to find the slope
and made the connection
of the numeric value and
how that affects how fast
the person would fall
through the slide.

Students had an idea on

which slide they wanted
BUT
They couldnt prove why
they thought that could be
the answer
Students plotted the
points in reverse (They
mightve but the x
coordinate in the y, and
vice versa)
OR
They might connect the
line incorrectly.
Student might have gotten
confused on which
coordinate corresponded
with the formula
OR
The student mightve
gotten some algebra mixed
up.

Students were not able to identify

which slide was better
OR
Students just chose a slide because it
looked better.

Graphing and
Plotting Points

Student chose the right

slide and made the
connection between the
numeric value of slope and
how fast the slide would
go.
Students plotted the
points correctly and
connected the line
accurately

Problem Solving
(Actual math)

Students got the correct

numeric value of the slope
of the line by showing
appropriate work
BUT
They couldnt quite make
the connection between
the numeric value and
explaining why the higher
number made one slide
better than the other.

Students were not able to plot the

points at all. They didnt even attempt
to take a guess

Students were not able to solve the

slope for any of the slides
OR
Students chose a slide and had no work
done to prove their answer.

Summative Assessment
Task:
You are in WOOSH Water Park and you have one ticket left for a water slide ride. You have two choices, you want to use the ticket
on the slide that will give you the most adrenaline and will make you feel the most pumped. Using the two pictures below find the
exact slope of each slide and tell me which slide you would choose and explain why.
Slide 1:
Plot the given points and connect

Slide 2:

* The lines will be given, the students will

them to get your first slide.

just have to determine what the points

(2, 1) & (4, 7). Find the slope.

are.* Find the slope.

Formative Assessment for LEP 2: Exit ticket.
Exit Ticket:
Please write down the slope formula and what each part represents.
Point ( 3 , 5 ) and ( -7 , 1 )

Rubric for grading this:

2-1-0 system:
2 points- to the students who wrote the formula in the correct order and matched every part accordingly.
1 point- to the students who either got the formula down or labelled the parts but could put the formula together.
0 points- to the students who dont hand anything in, or cant get passed labelling what the X1, Y1 of a set is
