INTRODUCTION
The following catalog serves as a guide to French Books before 1601 on 35mm
microfilm. This collection is largely based upon titles in the Short-Title Catalog of
Books Printed in France and of French Books Printed in Other Countries from 14701600, Now in the British Museum. It includes 15th- and 16th-century books printed
in such outstanding printing centers as Lyons and Paris, as well as unique works
from little-known presses. Highlights of the collection include De historia Titi Livii
epitome, an example of early printing at the Sorbonne by Gering, Friburger and
Crantz, as well as Horae, or the Livre d'Heures that Philippe Pigouchet printed in
1498 in Paris, a magnificent example of French calligraphy and miniature
painting. It is a continuing project bringing together in one source a significant
collection of materials from many libraries in the United States and Europe, and
providing valuable information to researchers in numerous areas of study.
French Books before 1601 was originally published by General Microfilm Company
which eventually changed its name to OmniSys Corporation. Norman Ross
Publishing is now the publisher of this collection and will be producing its
annual supplements. As of June 2002, French Books before 1601 contained 2,582
titles on 549 reels. Although the reels are numbered from 1530, the actual reel
count is 549. The reason for this discrepancy is that occasionally the same
number was designated for two separate reels. For example, Reel 48 consists of
two reels, labeled 48 (1 of 2) and 48 (2 of 2).
Prior to 2002, the short title list compiled by General Microfilm had never been
computerized. When we digitized the list, we discovered that some titles had
been filmed twice. While calculating the total number of titles in the set, different
editions of the same title were counted individually. However, any duplications
of the same editions were counted only once. We cannot easily remove the
duplicates from the set, but this error will not be repeated in the future.
French Books before 1601 may be purchased as an entire set, or over the course of
time on a subscription basis. Individual reels are also available for sale. If a
library is interested in a specific title, the entire reel containing that title must be
purchased.
The following catalog contains an author index followed by a title index.
Norman Ross Publishing will also provide a catalog sorted by reel number to any
customer who has purchased the set and wishes to have one. Unfortunately, the
organization of items throughout the collection is quite random. For improved
access to these titles, all three lists can be provided as files or in print. In
addition, most reels in this collection have MARC records that were created by
the Center for Research Libraries and are available through OCLC.
