The Senseless Generation
The modern age of computers has nearly become an epidemic. This past generation has
gotten so reliant of their computers that they have lost their intelligence. People now get stressed
out if their batter runs low or if they lose signal. People in this modern age have the power of
limitless nolige at their fingertips but they dont have the sense to learn from it. This nation has
grown so reliant on its own technology that they need spellcheck to make words into coherent
sentences: they need calculators to do simple math: They need social media sites just to talk to
people. The modern age needs to stop using their computers as their brains before they truly
become them.

(Figure 1)

To all those who do own

smartphones, tablets, nooks, or any other
hand held computer, I am here to inform
you of the truths behind them. I Isaac
Rewa would like to enlighten you on a
few facts: Our own devises are hindering our problem solving skills but may in some ways be
helping us socialize with other cultures much more easily.
Smartphones are like a cheat sheet for a test, they give you all the right answers but you
learn nothing. We seem to trust the judgment of the technology more so than our own. We may
be losing confidence in ourselves. We find ourselves typing simple multiplication problems into

Rewa 2

calculators instead of figuring it out ourselves. We trust MapQuest to lead use everywhere we
need to go. Why do we like to use these devises? Holography News expands, In the decades of
research on holo-storage systems, we have gone from magnetic to optical to flash drives, each
offering higher capacities and faster access and lower costs (see page 1). Which means these
devices are cheap to make and theyre the fastest made yet. What happens when these systems
fail? We get frustrated, angry, and most of all we become lost in our own ignorance.
The use of smartphones can be a big help in many instances. Like if you want to
introduce yourself to someone. You can use social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,
Zoosk. They are very convenient and cheap to meet new people. You would not have to take
the time to meet in person right away. You could get to know them a little better before you
decide if they are worth meeting. Smart phones and other hand held computers also have many
helpful features. You can use you smartphone for navigation for long trips so you have less of a
chance of losing your way. Now some restaurants even offer an online ordering system. Some
apps can even give u access to view what another person has been up to on their phone.
Michelle Cottle, the author of The Adultery Arms Race says that Even as he calls virtual
surveillance a powerful tool, though, Frank also declares it a limited one. No matter how
clever the technology becomes, there will always be work-arounds (see page 4). There are an
endless amount of apps out there for weather reports, calendar updates, alarm clocks, and I have
even heard of one that can solve math problems for you. If thats not convenience I dont know
what is.
Some effect of the modern age of technology has brought us many huge steps forward in
human interaction. Some of these modern technologies include FaceTime and skype. These
systems allow people to talk face to face through their phones and computers. They allow

Rewa 3

people to see and talk to each other from great distances. They have indeed enhanced many long
distances relationships. These systems have even allowed people in different countries to
communicate face to face for little cost. These systems may one day help our entire world find
unity.
There are also a few negative aspects to interpersonal communication that smartphones
and other hand held computers seem to be hindering. Smartphone can be very distracting.
Especially if you are not interested in your present surroundings. Smartphone offer endless
games and apps that often sidetrack your immediate goals. An example of this is if you are
hanging out at a friends house and you check your phone: Since you check your phone for any
text messages you might as well play a quick game of candy crush: Before you now it twenty
minutes have done by and you and you friend have hardly talked to each other. You can lose
hours of your day just staring at your computer screen playing games or watching Netflix. You
do still need some in person communication. If you want to cultivate a deeper relationship.
Alice Martin, the author of The 4 Negative Side Effects of Technology, explains that the
different platforms like apps, role-playing online games, social networks, etc. This
advancement has hampered the physical interaction skills of many children. Due to that
they dont know how to interact with others when they meet them in-person or what
gesture they should carry.
This means that kids are interacting so much more though technology than they do in person.
The result of this kids these days just dont know
how to interact with each other. In figure 2, it
shows the amount of time people have been

Rewa 4

spending on the internet. Specifically sites like Yahoo, Facebook, and Google. This graph
shows that sites like Google and Facebook are on the rise.
(Figure 2)
Though with all of its glory it has a few draw backs. The human aspect of it cant get
enough of it. We humans are easily entertained with simple games and fancy wed sites. We
tend to get obsessed with checking Facebook or twitter. We even tend to loose interest in
conversations we hold with friends: Because we want to have another go at that new game you
got. We become more interested in the digital world than the real world. We are becoming
computer junkies, we just cant get enough of it.
The modern age has brought us many good things like social networking sites to help us
meet people but they also brought use systems that distract us and make us lethargic. It is our
job to make sure that we use the knowledge that is so easily acquire and put it to good use. We
need to be more aware of the amount of time we spend on our pointless apps and games and
make sure our friends do not drift away from us.
