Exercise 2: Research/Argument Proposal
1. Why does the birthright citizenship want to be eliminated? Will eliminating the birthright
citizenship be better for American citizens or is it just another way to stop immigrants from
coming to the United States?
2. Eliminating the birthright citizenship will make living in the United States more complicated
because Americans who choose to have children in the United States will have to hire an
attorney to prove that their children are American Citizens according to Margret Stock a
retired military officer and an attorney who teaches political science at the University of
Alaska. So eliminating the birthright citizenship would be costly to Americans.
3. According to Will Wilkinson a researcher at the Cato Institute says that it would make
America more, rather than less, welcoming to newcomers. He says eliminating would be a
less aggressive way to reform immigration because we wouldnt need to use force to keep
immigrants out of the United States. He also states that, Ending full birthright citizenship
leaves open many intermediate possibilities, such as granting citizenship to children born to
foreign citizens who have legally resided in the country for a predetermined number of
years.

4. I think the opposing view is a little bias saying it would be immigrant friendly because,
although it would be immigrant friendly, eliminating the birthright citizenship will be an UnAmerican thing to do. America is supposed to be the land of opportunity. Eliminating the
birthright citizenship will mean that the only people that are going to be labeled American
citizens are those who are American by bloodline meaning American citizen would no
longer be ethnically different.
5. The birthright citizenship should not be eliminated because it is un-American and it would
cost Americans a lot of money.
6. What about the women coming in from foreign countries having their children hear and
taking advantage of our benefits?
Removing the birthright citizenship would be like blaming a child for a decision they did not
make. Furthermore, women are not only coming to the U.S. to have their babies here they
come here to work just like men.
