Teaching Philosophy Statement

As an aspiring teacher I can acknowledge that the fundamentals of my

framework comes from the Esteves School of Education. Sage Graduate School
has made every effort to instill the notion that educating young minds relies on
taking learning into action and application. I have taken this concept as a
future educator and applied it to the beliefs, goals, objectives, and ambitions
that I have for my students.
To Be, To Know, To Do, is the Russell Sage College motto and it stands for:
1. To be well-grounded in knowledge about schools/communities, learners
and learning.
2. To know curricular content and models of instruction, including
technology and its application.
3. To do what is necessary to ensure the success of all learnersand to
collaborate with families/community members in respectful, culturally
responsive ways.
I have taken these three concepts that were taught to me by Sage and utilized
them in my own classroom. These concepts are seen in my everyday abilities to
teach routines, lessons, assignments, and activities.
My Learning Concept:
Learning is a continuous process, which can help people to acquire new
knowledge and skills through understanding. It also provides different ways of
thinking and understanding new material. Because of our brains plasticity our
minds are always changing and forming in response to repeated stimulation.
Young children process information slowly because their brain cells lack the
myelin necessary for fast, clear nerve impulse transmission. By keeping that in
mind...

I want my students to know that it is okay to make mistakes!

I will engage my students in Deliberate Practice (where you isolate what

is not working and master the difficult areas before moving on).

This metaphor is what guides my teaching process; I give my students a

starting point and from there, with my guidance and encouragement they
will be able to find their way to what lies ahead for them.
"Teaching is like farming, you plant the seed of knowledge, fertilize
it with your experience, and nurture it along the way. Then you are
blessed with the opportunity to watch it grow, until one day it is
ready for harvest." Miss. Kara James

My Teaching Concept:

I stand by the concept of learning by doing - active participation helps

students to understand ideas and acquire skills.

I will provide positive reinforcement, encouragement, and motivation that

is necessary in your childs educational success.

I will incorporate the Best Practices Pyramid when it comes to

differentiated learning styles. The three components of this pyramid
include:
1. Abstract Learning
2. Pictorial Learning
3. Concrete Learning

I will accommodate different learning abilities in the classroom by

providing a copy of my notes for students in need, providing extra time
on tests and on in class assignments, providing extra assistance with
proofing work before it is handed in for a grade, and by being flexible to
learning needs.

How I Establish Relationships:

I believe that establishing relationships with my students is essential in

order for students to get the most out of their learning experience.

I strongly believe in creating a sense of community with my students and

their families. Throughout the year there will be many occasions for the
parents/guardians to come in and enjoy each others company.

BBQs, holiday parties, and going to community events is what keeps my

relationship with my students alive and well.

My Goals for Students:

The goal for my students is that we are moving from learning to read to
reading to learn and from learning to write to writing to
communicate.

I am also advocating for my students to work independently.

The expectations that I have for my classroom is that we all treat each
other with respect, kindness, open-mindedness, and courtesy.

I would like for my students to learn not only the content, but also skills
such as critical thinking, writing, and problem solving.

How I Implement My Philosophy

I have many activities planned for the upcoming year that strive towards
getting the facts off paper. There will be less worksheets for my student
to fill out and more hands on instructions and interactions.

I am a very compassionate, structured, yet creative person and these

characteristics reflect in my teaching practices. Students will notice that
with structured assignments comes room for creative thinking, and with
creative projects comes structure. I have modified my technique so that it
fits the needs of all students in the classroom.
