Self Portraits

Objective: Students will create a portrait of themselves using the materials provided.
Standards:
Visual Arts, First Grade. S.4, Relate and Connect to Transfer: Visual arts relate experiences to self, family,
and friends.
Materials:
-Free Standing Mirror (Optional)
-Coloring supplies
-Pencil
Anticipatory Set: We will begin with noticing that each person is completely different, and that we all
have features that we like about ourselves, We will then grab a sheet of paper and commence to create
a working image of how we see ourselves.
Switch up this lesson! Use only newspaper, or use only precut out shapes
Instructional Process: I will make my portrait in front of the children as part of circle time, students can
help me add features I may not see. Students will break up into their own individual seats and begin to
make themselves out of whatever materials youve provided.
Closure: Have a gallery walk! Set up your students art and have them walk around to see each others
work! And talk about what they may have had difficulty with.
Independent Practice: none.
