Painting to Music

Objective: Students will be able to paint mood and motion, to the music playing in the background of
the classroom.
Standards:
Music, First Grade S.3, Creation of Music: Create Music by composing and or arranging what is heard or
envisioned in notated or non-notated form, with or without the use of music technology. Demonstrating
originality, demonstrating originality and technical understanding.
Visual Arts, First Grade, S.3, Invent and Discover to Create: Use art media and processes to express,
ideas, feelings, and emotions (DOK 1-3)

Materials:
-Blank Sheet of paper
-Music
-Watercolors
-Brushes of all sizes
-Clean up supplies

Anticipatory Set: This lesson is a fantastic transition into quiet time, or end of the day closing activity. I
would have children sit at their tables, and close their eyes as the music plays, when the music stops
children will paint what they saw when the music played, Music will continue to play as they paint to
what theyve internalized.
*Play with the speed, ask that the children be as bold as they choose! Promote creativity.
Instructional Process: The beginning of this lesson will be a short lecture, mostly just to explain what the
activity will be, after instruction has been given, this will be a guided practice activity.
Have children play with line, color and shapes to further the lesson.
Closure: End with a slow song, and collect the completed art work.

Independent Practice: Do it at home with family, again, it serves as a wonderful calming activity for
children of all ages.
