I am thinking of researching how the trends in communication are shaping (positively or

negatively) the future of language. The world is now very much connected via the Internet and is
unified. It is also important because it is widely used and the language we use online often does
not follow proper grammar rules and uses slangs and acronyms that are being incorporated in
everyday conversation. As such, the use of social media/networks, text messaging, other instant
messaging interfaces may be shaping the future of verbal language.
The intended audience is mainly teenagers who need to be aware that they may be killing
language. However, this topic concerns the other generations too. The older ones often need to
learn the new slang words to understand whats going on around: their childrens conversations,
advertisements As for the younger generations, they will be born and grow in this new
language world. They might thus lack academic writing and speaking skills.
I am thinking of discussing texting and instant messaging. By using statistics (number of
messages sent per day), we can infer that people dont have time to write in full anymore. Life is
busier and we have to keep up with the social life real and virtual. We tend to mix up them up,
for example, meeting people online before meeting them in person, or using internet slang in
everyday verbal conversation. Another might be the interconnected within the world which
might lead to all countries eventually converging to a few spoken languages only so that
everyone can understand each other better.
I found a few sources so far in the form of articles. They provide background information about
how texting lacks punctuation, or about relationships among textism use, language and skills.
Sources from other countries might also help to accentuate that the topic at hand is a universal
issue. The sources also provide some statistics about the frequency/amount of the use of
technological communication devices, the number of people it affects I am hoping to find
more sources in the library or online to supplement what I already have and give more weight to
the research essay and what it hopes to achieve. These could be more statistics, studies
