1. STATEMENT OF THE PUPILS PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

AND SKILLS
General
Being a first year class, this group has a basic understanding of the Materials
Technology Wood room. They have been given a general outline of the Rules of the
Room and behavior regarding Health and Safety. Even though this outline has been
delivered it is an ongoing process, reinforcing Rules and underpinning Health and Safety
in each class period.
Theory
They have covered the theory of Jointing Techniques, including their names,
advantages and disadvantages &the process of marking out each joint. This theory class
has been reinforced in the practical class, applying some of these joints to a certain
project. They have an awareness and understanding of the theory in a number of chapters
including: Wood (hardwood & softwood, stages of growth), Parts of the Tree, Tree
Growth, Conversion & Seasoning of Timber, Diseases & Defects, Preserving Timber &
Types of Preservative and Manufactured Boarding.
Practical
They have developed a fundamental competency in the following basic Woodworking
techniques: Sawing, Chiseling and Planing. Following this, specific practical tasks
relative to those three techniques were undertaken and the class has also completed a
small project which encompassed the three skills in one.

2. RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION & STRUCTURING OF

SUBJECT MATTER AND FOR THE METHODOLOGY
The rationale behind selecting this subject matter is to introduce the class to the
different types of hand tools that exist, not only within their particular Woodwork Room
but in other applications also. For example, a Tenon Saw in school in comparison to a
Japanese Saw in a fine woodworking workshop. It is been chosen now so as to
familiarize the students with all the different types of tools needed to manufacture any
given piece of furniture, in advance of their practical. This will include explaining the use
of the tool, naming the parts, explaining the parts function and sketching and rendering of
the tool in a neatly annotated manner. This will be effectively enhanced by physical and
visual displays of each tool in an attempt to better their interpretation and understanding
of the tool
The practical side of things will ground the learnings and knowledge gained in the
theory class. Constant referrals will be made to the theory throughout the six weeks.
Making the Tea Pot Stand will also greatly benefit the development of their practical
skills and having a completed item that they can use at home will heighten motivation to
complete a good standard project. This is compared to just making joints for the sake of
practice. This project incorporates all into one.
Note: With regards to the theoretical aspect of things, I will be delivering the classes
as instructed by the teacher and in accordance with his methodologies/policies. This
involves the students being in a passive state and transcribing from the board. As its very
factual information, which is illustrated concisely (very little text) and with pictures, I
feel that this is an appropriate approach. However, I plan on displaying real models of the
tools to the class, to be passed around after material has been taken down into the notes
copy.

3. AIMS

The aims of this scheme are to:

Provide pupils with a link between theory and practical classes regarding the safe
use of woodworking hand tools.

Relate tools to real life applications and consequent surroundings.

Allow pupils to apply theoretical information to a practically based project.

Enhance their visual and sketching/rendering skills.

Encourage the safe use of hand tools.

Develop the pupils practical abilities.

Enable pupils to interpret a working drawing and apply the information to a piece
of timber using the relevant tools.

Increase numeracy skills (in practical class) and literacy skills (in theory class).

Encourage motivation to make a project to a relatively high standard.

Introduce how to apply an appropriate finish to a projects and highlight key areas
surrounding finishing.

4. LEARNING OUTCOMES & CORRESPONDING

5. NUMERACY & LITERACY STRATEGY

Numeracy: I plan to address the Numeracy issue in this class by leaving out the key
dimensions in a drawing. When the issue is raised, (i.e. Whats the distance for this
Sir.whats the measurement here Sir?) I plan on stopping the work and asking them to
work it out as a group through addition and subtracting. Being a 1st year group, it will be
essential that they are competent in the use of the ruler. I plan to emphasize the correct
use of the ruler and its application to the timber.
Literacy: Literacy should not be a major issue in this particular class as there isnt too
much difficult terminology to comprehend with. However, it is still a major issue that
needs to be addressed so I plan on

6. DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY

I have designed the Tea Pot Stand as a universal project. It is not gender specific
and would appeal to everyone in the class.

The top piece is to be designed and shaped by the students to add an element of
ownership/identity to the project and encourage a bit of motivation to make a good
standard project. For the excelling students who have finished first, a
marquetry/pyrography design can be introduced too.

As there is a student of a different nationality in this class I will encourage him to

bring an element of his culture to it.
