Topic Development: Caring in Trauma

Trauma nursing care in the emergency room departments have become more in
demand as the population in the United States has been increasing. Especially in the
subpopulation of those that are elderly. Emergency Rooms work as a trained team with
social workers, case managers, respiratory therapists, radiology technicians, and clergy
whom all aim to provide the best care available to patients. Offering care to the elderly in
the emergency room setting can be difficult, but the results are rewarding. Having a good
foundation of knowledge in the physiological and psychosocial changes that occur with
aging and consideration of emotional and spiritual well-being will help to make the older
patient's stay in the setting beneficial and life saving.
Trauma care for soldiers is an untypical setting for nurses. There are U.S. military
nurses, Air Force nurses, and Army nurses. These nurses served in Vietnam in 1962. They
cared for soldiers suffering from battle wounds and the sick that were down with an
infection or disease. The job is demanding of ones personal health. The Vietnam War
brought at least three changes in the nursing profession. First, nurses developed practice
specialties, much as physicians had already begun to do. Nurses were particularly
successful in the specialties of trauma and critical care and anesthesia. Second, the war
afforded many opportunities for nurses to practice more independently and with greater
professional autonomy. Nurses, physicians, and patients were able to observe the benefit of
increased flexibility and effectiveness in nurses activities.
