BUNGIES HISTORY
Bungie, Inc. is an American video game developer located in Bellevue, Washington, U.S. The
company was established in May 1991 as Bungie Software Products Corporation by University
of Chicago undergraduate student Alex Seropian, who later brought in programmer Jason
Jones after publishing Jones' game Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Originally based in
Chicago, Illinois, the company concentrated primarily on Macintosh games during its early
years and created two very successful video game franchises called Marathon and Myth. A
West Coast offshoot produced the PC and console title Oni.
Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000; the project it was working on was repurposed into a
launch title for Microsoft's Xbox console, called Halo: Combat Evolved. Halo became the
Xbox's "killer application", selling millions of copies and spawning a billion dollar franchise.
On October 5, 2007, Bungie announced that it had split from Microsoft and become a
privately held independent company, Bungie LLC
Microsoft still owns the rights to the Halo franchise.

THE HALO SERIES

PRESIDENT OF BUNGIE
Harold Ryan is the current President of Bungie LLC. He was formerly a game
tester and configuration tester and has worked on several video games,
including the Close Combatseries, Crimson Skies, and Halo. He was born and
raised in eastern Washington.
He was credited as test manager of Halo: Combat Evolved. He also served as
test manager and producer for Halo 2 on Bungie.net. He became studio
manager at the start of 2006 and led a team of 115. As of 2008, he is the head
of the entire company.
Fun Fact Harold Ryan has the smallest desk at Bungie.

DESTINY

DESTINYS SUCCESS
Destiny began development in 2007.
On September 10, 2014, Activision claimed that Destiny was the most
successful new gaming franchise launch of all time, as the game shipped more
than US$500 million to retail stores and first-parties worldwide.
As of September 17, 2014, there have been over 11 million gameplay sessions
within North America.

On November 4, 2014, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that


the game has 9.5 million registered players.

BUNGIE SHADER FX ARTIST


Estimated Duration: Long term, project (duration may be shortened or lengthened based on business needs).

Responsibilities
Build shaders and creatively manipulate supporting meshes and textures to create visual effects that enhance the overall composition
Work with the art lead to create content to inform, communicate, and enhance the gameplay experience, while remaining grounded in
established art-direction and fiction
Communicate and collaborate with other art disciplines (particle FX, lighting, animation, hard-surface) to understand how all the
content-types will be aggregated together to make that glorious unified visual effect
Find opportunities to leverage existing content as groundwork for new content, and how you can manipulate existing content to make
it even better
Required Skills

Have extensive experience with professional node-based shader editor


Ability to make strong and pleasing artistic statements by manipulating the underlying math
Familiarity with Max and/or Maya for modeling and UV manipulation
Experience working with designers to define design needs, and marrying those requirements with art goals
Have a discerning and artistic eye for visual FX: know when to make it sizzle and when to have a refined, light touch
Be able to break down any visual effect concept into component content-types (particle FX, shader FX, mesh FX, animation, lighting,
etc.) and choose the right tools for the right job
Ability to understand the dynamics of the engine in order to build memory-efficient and perf-friendly content
Give constructive feedback on development of art pipeline and tools

Bungie's office is located in Bellevue, WA, which is a short drive from Redmond and Kirkland and just across the 520 or I-90
bridges from Seattle. The Puget Sound area, which includes the aforementioned "Eastside" communities and Seattle proper,
has a plethora of nightlife and entertainment ranging from frequent concerts, superb dining and four major professional
sports teams (Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders FC, and Storm).
