Once per week, you will be asked to respond the the following questions in a journal which you will

share with
me. This will be done through google docs, and the assignment will be written in the Weekly Bulletin on the
portal and on the homework board in room 29. Please consider answering in bulleted lists - it will likely make
your work more easily managed.
1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
12/01/14:
We received our tests back, took the student survey, conducted the atom/element pre-assessment, and started
color coding the periodic table of elements.
12/03/14:
We finished color coding our period tables, took notes on basic vocabulary for this unit, and looked at the scale
of the universe.
12/04/14:
We talked more about the vocabulary learned yesterday in class, and we also started to talk about the
composition of atoms.
12/05/14:
We talked about electrons, electron shells, valences, figuring out what the charge of an isotope will be, why
molecules form, and patterns in the periodic table.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
What have done in science relates things outside of class, because we learned so much more about how
everything in the world works and functions, and we also learned more about reasoning behind why it does
certain things, or why certain things exist.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have personally learned that I struggle a lot with admitting when I do not completely know something, and
with being wrong to any degree, but especially answering a question in class.

1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
10/27/14:
We switched seats, and experimented with Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate.
10/29/14:
We talked about our experiment with Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate. We also talked about the phase changes of
matter, and how to graph them.
10/30/14:
We talked more about phase changes, and about how phase changes work with a substance that is composed
of two separate substances. We started planning for an experiment for tomorrow to separate substances from
each other using phase changes.
10/31/14:
We conducted an experiment to use the characteristic property of matter of phase changes to separate water
from isopropyl alcohol. We checked our results by trying to set the supposed water on fire, and then trying to
set the supposed isopropyl alcohol on fire. Since our experiment was conducted properly the isopropyl alcohol
was on fire until Ms. Crist and Niav unfortunately blew it out much to my dismay.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
It relates to the world outside of class in the ability to use critical thinking and prior knowledge to solve
problems which we used in designing our experiment.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have personally learned more about critical thinking and problem solving as well as the fact that Niav is a fire
blowing out fun ruiner.

1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
10/15/14:
We finished our experiment from the previous week, and worked on graphing and organizing data.
10/16/14:
We talked more about solubility curves, the line of best fit, and saturation.

10/17/14:
We had a potion science day!!!! We explored and experimented with the characteristic property of matter to
burn different colors. I also had a very colorful arguement with my lab partner Priya about Math vs. English.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
Learning how to organize and think about data as well as identify floo powder are good skills to have in life.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have learned that maybe I should tone back arguments and see other peoples sides.
1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
10/6/14:
We went over the SI challenge, and cleaned up the SI challenge. We talked about MSDS, and about the
definitions of words like solubility.
10/8/14:
We talked about the different kinds of variables, solute, solvent, and solubility. We conducted an experiment to
see which solvent out of acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and distilled white vinegar would best dissolve the solute of
nail polish.
10/9/10:
We review the different kinds of variables, as well as solutes, solvents, and solubility. We talked as a class and
started writing an experiment together to test how the temperature of water affects how much sodium
magnesium you can dissolve in said water.
10/10/14:
We started carrying out the experiment we designed yesterday, and collected some data.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
It relates to the world in that it teaches us how to work together better to collaborate and discuss to design a
common product.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have personally learned more about how I need to work on collaborating and working with others.

1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
9/15/14:
We calculated the density of four metals and then calculated the density of an unknown object. We then used
the density of the four metals and compared it with the density of the unknown object to see which one the
density of the unknown object most closely resembled to predict which metal it was made of.
9/17/14:
We went over bunsen burner safety, and learned how to use bunsen burners. We then watched a safety video,
and started brainstorming for the safety video that we are making.
9/18/14:
We worked on, edited, and filmed our safety video.
9/19/14:
We showed our videos in class. We reviewed the important point of the unit for the test.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
It helps me know more about calculating unknowns and making predictions, and it also helps me learn more
about safety and rules.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have learned more about safety and working in groups as well as thinking about finding unknowns.

1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
9/8/14:
We talked about balances and how to use and stabilize them.
We also talked more about conversions in the metric system, and the mass of water.

9/10/14:
We talked about gravity, and force vs. weight.
We also talked about kelvin vs. celsius vs. fahrenheit.
9/11/14:
We talked about density and measuring with uncertainty.
We practiced measuring density, mass, and volume with uncertainty.
9/12/14:
We talked about data collection and the process to go through to figure things out in science.
We talked about the results of calculation density for four vials.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
It tells us more about how to view the world around us and helps us function more in a metric based world. It
also helps us think about how we figure things out.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have learned more about my thought process.

1. What have you done this week in science? (4 points per week)
9/3/14:
We went over the portal and what is expected of us in class and class basics. We downloaded the measurement
ibook, we reviewed substance X, and we went over accuracy vs. precision.
9/4/14:
We talked about the Imperial and metric systems, their standardization and history, and their conversions
accuracy, and precision.
9/5/13:
We looked at volume and measuring volume with the SI system, and doing conversions between units for
volume.
2. How does what you have done in science relate to the world outside of class? [4 points per
week]
It tells us more about the history of measurement. It also helps show us more about the importance of
communication through both words and numbers, and how communication needs to be clear.
3. What have you personally learned from these experiences? [4 points per week]
I have learned more about the history of measurement, and why communication and measurement are so
important and need to be very clear.
