Case 3:
Cyber Security for Education
Background:
You are currently employed at the local high school as the school technology coordinator. Recently the
superintendent of your large school corporation has announced that all faculty and students within the
school corporation need to be trained about cyber security and ethics. He cited the following Indiana
State Legislation:

The superintendent would like to start this training by having all tech coordinators come together and
create a repository of cyber security topics of concern and guidelines for safe Internet practices. This
repository will then be used by the teachers to create the needed classroom curriculum.
Based on Section 3 of the Indiana State Code, the curriculum guidelines must cover: a) safe online
communication; b) privacy protection; c) cyberbullying; d) viewing inappropriate material (i.e., use of
filters); e) file sharing safety; f) copyright, g) Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs), and g) proper online
etiquette.
Product. It was determined among all tech coordinators that you would work together in groups of 2-3
and produce an electronic poster (i.e., Murally) and then present that poster at the tech coordinators
monthly meeting (Monday, December 1, 2014). Your group can use one or more of the following tools
to create your poster: (Biteslide (www.biteslide.com); Murally (www.mural.ly); Piktochart
(www.piktochart.com)). Your group will be assigned a specific topic within the realm of cyber ethics or
security. The poster must contain the following:
a. Title of the cyber issue
b. Description of the issue (e.g., what it is, why it is a potential problem, why educators should be
concerned about it, facts about its prevalence, potential impact if no actions are taken)
c. Resources (video, research articles, reference materials) that will allow the reader/teacher to find
out more information
d. Guidelines (i.e., safety measures) for how it should be addressed
e. Proper references (APA formatted) for all materials that are used/cited
The finished product must be an electronic poster that can be electronically displayed and collected
within the corporations cyber ethics/security repository. All posters will be displayed and reviewed by
all of the other tech coordinators.

Time Frame. Your finished electronic poster will be ready for display at the beginning of class on
Monday, December 1, 2014. All presentations will be made on this same day.
Grading/marks. Your poster and presentation will be judged on a 30-point scale. The criteria include:
____ (8 pts.) Relevance of the issue. The description of the issue/problem is clearly and concisely
presented and explained. Facts about the problem are addressed - Why is it an important issue? What
is the impact of not addressing the issue?
____ (4 pts.) Guidelines. Clear guidelines and rules are presented on how the issue should be handled
from an educators perspective. Explanations of those guidelines are given that add clarity when
needed.
_____ (4 pts.) Resources. Additional resources (embedded videos, pictures, critical readings) are
included within the poster for ready use and reference. In addition, APA style references are included
that indicate all resources used for the job aid.
____ (4 pts.) High face value. Professionally presented. All formatting was completed in a professional
manner. Spelling and grammar mistakes were non-existent. The electronic poster was well thought out
and delivered in a professional manner. Proper references were utilized and documented throughout.
____ (4 pts.) Class presentation/demonstration.

All group members presented* and discussed the electronic poster in a professional manner.
The 5-7 minute presentation was succinct, interesting and highlighted the key issues involved
while demonstrating the electronic poster.
A less than 5 minute screencast (i.e., Jing) of the electronic poster/infographic presentation was
also completed. This screencast should be succinct, clear, and interesting to view. NOTE: The
screencast cannot be used in place of the live in-class presentation.

____ (6 pts.) Blog post. On your web site portfolio blog, a clear, well-written post was made that
included:

Thoughts about the overall issue and its relevance to students

Additional comments about a minimum of three other topics that were reviewed during the
poster presentations should be included. These descriptions should address the quality of the
posters as well as the relevance of the topic.
Finally, the electronic posters as a means to present such information should also be discussed.

Completed posters and blog posts should be uploaded no later than the beginning of your lab section on
Wednesday, December 3, 2014.
*In order to view your poster, one group member must bring a device (e.g. laptop, iPad) in which to
display your finished product.
