Overview and solutions
Preface
The Frost & Sullivan Technology Leadership Award 2006 was
presented to Siemens for pioneering in the development of
an innovative technology, the IEC 61850.
With Siemens energy automation solutions, every user is on
the safe side: the combination of long-term experience and
the newest innovation supplies safety for many years to
come. Our solutions are not only compatible with older
devices, they are also very innovative.
Overview and solutions
During the last years, the influences on the business of the
power supply companies have changed a lot. The approach
to power grid operation has changed from a static, quasi-stable interpretation to a dynamic operational management of
the electric power grid. Enhanced requirements regarding
the economy of lifetime for all assets in the grid are gaining
importance. As a result, the significance of automation systems has increased a lot, and the requirements for control,
protection and remote control have undergone severe
changes of paradigm:
Flexible and tailor-made solutions for manifold
applications
Secure and reliable operation management
Cost-effective investment and economic operation
Efficient project management
Long-term concepts, future-proof and open for new
requirements
Siemens energy automation solutions offer an answer to all
current issues of todays utilities. Based on a versatile product
portfolio and many years of experience, Siemens plans and
delivers solutions for all voltage levels and all kinds of substations (figure 1/1).
The classical interface to the primary equipment is centralized with many parallel cables sorted by a marshalling rack.
In such an environment, central protection panels and centralized RTUs are standard. Data interfaces can make use of
high-density I/O elements in the rack, or of intelligent terminal modules, which are even available with DC 220 V for digital inputs and direct CT/VT interfaces.
Even in such configurations, the user can benefit from full
automation and communication capabilities. This means that
classical RTU solutions, interfaces to other IEDs are included,
and HMIs for station operation and supervision can be added
as an option. Also, the protection relays are connected to the
RTU, so that data from the relays are available both at the
station operation terminal and in the control centers.
All members of the SICAM family family can be equipped
with different combinations of communication, both serial
and Ethernet (TCP/IP). Different protocols are available,
mainly IEC standards, e.g. IEC 60870-5-101/103/104 IEC
61850, IEC 62056-21, but also a lot of other well-known
protocols from different vendors.

Introduction
Overview and solutions
Figure 1/2 shows an example of refurbishment and centralized data acquisition in an MV substation. The interface to
the primary equipment is connected via a marshalling rack,
but can use any peripheral voltage (DC 24-220 V). The electronic terminal blocks are designed to substitute conventional terminal blocks, thereby realizing a very economic
design. Existing protection relays can be connected either by
IEC 60870-5-103 or by the more enhanced IEC 61850.

Introduction
Examples
In transmission substations, typically two to four voltage levels are to be automated. According to the high importance of
such substations, availability is of the highest priority. Therefore, redundancy at substation level is generally required,
both for station control units and station operation. Multiple
operator stations are often required, multiple communication links to different control centers or neighboring substations are standard.
1/8
Although most standard applications are IEC protocols, specific protocols also have to be offered for interfacing existing
third-party devices. Complex automation functions support
the operation and maintenance of such substations, such as
voltage regulation by controlling on-load tap changers, synchrocheck, automatic command sequences etc. (figure 1/7).
The devices are as flexible as the configurations: Bay controllers, protection relays, station control units, station operation
units and RTUs can be configured from small to very large.
The well-known products of the SICAM and SIPROTEC series
are a well-proven base for the Siemens solutions.
Introduction
Secure and reliable operation
All images and pictures of the HMIs are organized hierarchically and, for easy access, they guide the user to the required
information and to fast alarm recognition. In addition, alarm
and event logs, measurement curves, fault records, archives
and flexible reports support the analysis of any situation in
the power grid (figure 1/8). For security reasons, only specially authorized personnel is granted access to operation
and engineering tools. Flexible access rights are defined for
operators, design engineers and service personnel, and differentiate between engineering access and operation rights.
Security of data transmission is catered for by secure protocols and secure network design. Especially, easy remote
access to substations creates the need for such complex
measures. The experienced Siemens engineers provide all
the necessary knowledge for network security concepts.

System architecture
SICAM PAS works on industrial-standard hardware with the
Microsoft Windows operating systems. The advantages of
this platform are low hardware and software costs, ease of
operation, scalability, flexibility and constantly available support. With the powerful real-time data distribution system,
applications can be allocated among several computers, thus
boosting performance, connectivity and availability.
A database system stores and organizes the data basis (e.g.
configuration data, administrative status data etc.). The
device master function for communication with intelligent
electronic devices (IEDs) supports a large number of wellestablished protocols. The SICAM PAS data normalization
function allows conversions such as measured-value filtering, threshold value calculation and linear characteristics.
SICAM SCC is used for process visualization. Specifically
designed for energy applications, it assists the operating personnel in optimizing the operations management. It provides
a quick introduction to the subject matter and a clearly
arranged display of the systems operating states. SICAM SCC
is based on SIMATIC WinCC, one of the leading process visualization processes that is used in industrial automation
worldwide.

SICAM PAS
Communication
Communication
Device interfaces and communication protocols
In a substation configured and operated with SICAM PAS,
various types of protection relays, IEDs, bay control units,
measured-value recorders and telecontrol units from a wide
range of manufacturers can be used. SICAM PAS offers a
large number of commercially available communication protocols for recording data from various devices and through
differing communication channels. Subsequent expansion is
easy.
Available protocols:
These communication protocols and device drivers can be
obtained as optional additions to the standard scope of
SICAM PAS.
IEC 61850 (Client)
IEC 61850 is the communication standard for interconnecting the devices at the feeder and station control levels on the basis of Ethernet. IEC 61850 supports the
direct exchange of data between IEDs, thus enabling
switching interlocks across feeders independently of the
station control unit, for example.
IEC 60870-5-103 (Master)
Protection relays, IEDs, bay control units, measuredvalue recorders and transformer controllers from many
manufacturers support the IEC 60870-5-103 protocol
and can therefore be connected directly to SICAM PAS.
IEC 60870-5-101 (Master)
The IEC 60870-5-101 protocol is generally used to connect telecontrol units. The balanced and unbalanced
traffic modes are supported.
IEC 60870-5-104 (Master)
Furthermore, connection of substations is also supported by the TCP/IP-based IEC 60870-5-104 protocol.

Automation
Figure 2.1/3 Typical redundant configuration: The station unit and the HMI server are based on a redundant structure to boost availability
Automation tasks
can be configured in SICAM PAS with the CFC (Continuous
Function Chart), which conforms to IEC 61131. In this editor,
tasks are configured graphically by wiring function blocks.
SICAM PAS comes with an extensive library of CFC function
blocks, developed and system-tested specially for energy
automation. Applications range from generation of simple
group indications through switching interlocks to complex
operating sequences. Creation of operating sequences is
supported by the SFC Editor (Sequential Function Chart).
In this context, additionally pre-configured and systemtested applications such as frequency-based load shedding,
transformer monitoring and SF6 gas monitoring can be
optionally licensed. Besides special functional components
and CFCs, the scope of supply also covers operating images
for SICAM SCC.
2.1/9
SICAM PAS
Automation
Redundancy
SICAM PAS features comprehensive redundancy functions to
boost the availability of the station automation system:
The substation control unit can be used in a duplicate
configuration (system redundancy)
The communication to IEDs and RTUs can be redundant
(interface redundancy)
Subordinate units can be duplicated (redundancy at the
bay control level)
Subunits that are only designed for communication with
one master (e.g. with only one serial interface) can be
supported
The individual applications (communication protocols) operate independently of each other in a hot/standby connection,
i.e. a changeover, e.g., of the IEC 61850 client from one
station control unit to the other due to a disturbance has no
effects on the communication connection to the control center, which remains on the first station control unit without
interruption. Apart from a higher stability in unaffected
communication connections, the redundancy changeover
of affected components takes place within a very short time
(depending on application and configuration, between
250 ms and max. 3 s).
Adjustments during operation such as bay/telecontrol blocking, switching authority, but also marking commands to the
SoftPLC for operational control of the automation functions
are kept synchronous in both station control units during
redundancy operation. The current adjustments are also
valid after a redundancy changeover. SICAM SCC communicates simultaneously with both redundant station control
units. A redundant structure is also possible for process visualization with SICAM SCC and fault-record archiving with
SICAM PQ Analyzer.

SICAM SCC
System overview
SICAM SCC functions for use with SICAM and IEC 61850
SICAM SCC is tailored to be used in energy applications
supporting operators with the task of optimizing system
management. It provides a fast and clear overview of the
system operating states. The specific properties of the HV
and MV switchgear in control and monitoring direction
(double commands and double-point indications) are optimally implemented in the indication lists and the graphic
process visualization.
SICAM SCC logging that adds value
The original time stamps are logged in the indication lists in
ms resolution as generated in the devices. Each indication is
displayed with a number of additional information items.
They provide information about the up-to-dateness of the
information in the event of a device or communication failure (up-to-date/not up-to-date) or an active bay blocking or
telecontrol blocking. In addition, they specify the cause of
the status change (spontaneous, command) and, in case of a
command, they provide information about the source of the
operation (local, remote). In addition to process indications,
command indications are logged, too. Each command operation is thus documented completely and in detail, from the
command initiation by the operator to command output and
feedback from the process after change of status of the controlled switchgear.

status changes to be processed in the station but not transmitted to the higher-level control center.
Substations are usually controlled from the higher-level control
centers, whereas switching commands are to be rejected by the
stations internal HMI; the switching authority is assigned to the
higher-level control center. If control from the HMI is required for
operational management reasons, the switching authority can
be obtained. If the substation is connected to several control
centers, the switching authority can also be assigned to specific
channels. Additionally, different switching authorities can be
used, e.g. for the different voltage levels.
SICAM SCC reduced engineering effort
Exchanging data with the connected substations frequently
involves several thousand indications, measured values and
commands. SICAM SCC provides wizards which considerably
facilitate the configuration of such information. The configuration tools (SICAM PAS UI Configuration, SICAM TOOLBOX II)
provide the required description of the process data in electronic form and can be imported conveniently using the SCC
wizards. Redundant data entries are thus avoided. SCD files
can be imported for IEC 61850 devices which are connected
directly.

SIMATIC WinCC basics
Runtime software
All HMI functions onboard, this characterizes the runtime
component of the WinCC basic software: Starting with a user
administration that meets all requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ranging to a user interface with lots of
configurable controls and functions up to a performant message and archiving system based on the integrated MS SQL
Server. Reporting and logging system as well as integrated
control technology functions complete the list.
Engineering software
The engineering component WinCC CS offers a set of editors
that leave nothing to be desired when talking about efficiency or user friendliness. Libraries and wizards make the
generation of a project fast and easy and reduce error-proneness considerably. As a software for most complex HMI tasks,
WinCC is able to handle comprehensive projects and mass
data.
Openness
SIMATIC WinCC consistently builds on the highest possible
openness and ability to integrate as it is designed for using
standard technologies and software tools: This comprises
basic technologies, operating systems, the ways of communication or the ability to integrate scripts, all on a non-proprietary basis.
Scalability
The basic system is scalable in all respects by employing
WinCC options. The basic software can already be adapted to
increasing quantity structures by finely graded licenses.
Yet, a chosen license can easily be upgraded in regard to the
number of process tags. By employing WinCC/Server, you can
run WinCC as a client/server application. WinCC/Redundancy
is used to build up a highly available SCADA system.

Basic functionality
Message system
SIMATIC WinCC doesnt just acquire process messages and
local events, it also stores them in circular archives and then
makes them available as desired on a filtered or sorted basis.
Messages can be derived from individual bits, can be a result
of an alarm message frame directly from the automation system or of analog alarms in the case of out-of-limit conditions. Individual acknowledgement procedures, a freely
definable message structure and configurable archiving as
well as logging of messages are additional features. In the
WinCC Alarm Control, the depiction of the messages can be
individually customized. Extensive selection options, e.g. via
a user-specific filter matrix, ensure an optimal overview. The
depiction of messages already swapped out is possible as
well. At the push of a button, the messages depicted can be
exported or printed out as a report. System-specific functions
can be implemented via freely configurable toolbar
functions.
The message hit list indicates the average and total times
that specific messages have been pending for (message
duration) and, in a similar way, the average and total
acknowledgement time.
Figure 3.1/3 SIMATIC Logon Service at WinCC basic system
User interface
Using WinCC standards, you can create customized configured user interfaces for any application. You can choose from
a comprehensive range of configurable standard objects.
The online language switching option enables you to switch
online between languages during runtime for projects
created for several target languages. Windows elements
like menus and toolbars can be integrated into the WinCC
user interface. WinCC makes it possible to represent screen
sizes of up to 10,000 x 10,000 pixels using intelligent zoom
functions. The view of a process screen in runtime can be
enlarged or reduced using the mouse wheel. When the picture has been assigned a zoom factor, the mouse can be
used for panning. After clicking on the mouse wheel, a navigation compass appears. Move the mouse pointer to scroll
the picture in the corresponding direction. Using decluttering,

Archiving system
Historical values or value progressions are stored in process
value archives. Besides process values, WinCC also archives
messages and application data. The archiving occurs in ring
archives in the integrated, high-performance MS SQL Server
database at a rate of up to 10,000 measured values and 100
messages per second. The storage capacity requirements are
very low due to powerful, lossless compression functions.
The WinCC basic system already allows up to 512 archive
tags to be configured. In the final capacity stage, PowerPacks
enable the expansion to up 120,000 tags. A central, optionally redundant, long-term archiving can be implemented via
a central archive server with the option WinCC/Central
Archive Server.
In the TrendControl, current values (online trend curves), historical process values, and desired value trend curves can be
depicted in the same trend display. The depiction of messages already swapped out is possible as well. In doing so, a
customized scaling of the time axis and the value range can
be performed (e.g. scaling in percent). The time and value
axes of the individual trend curves can be moved online by
mouse movement. This function, for example, can be used
for batch comparisons.

The texts for the runtime application can be edited in all primary languages of Windows. Besides static texts, this also
includes the tooltips. At the push of a button, a switch
between these languages can be executed while in runtime.
For the export and import of all texts in the CSV format, the
WinCC Text Distributor is provided, through which the translation can be easily carried out via standard tools.
To facilitate the translation of message texts, a text block
library (Text Library) exists, which in tabular form lists the
terms used in the individual languages. Convenient filter
mechanisms make working with large quantity structures
easier.

Thin-client solutions
With Simatic WinCC, you can implement client/server configurations, in which simply equipped Window PCs, rugged
Windows CE-based terminals (e.g. SIMATIC Thin Clients) or
mobile handheld devices can be employed as operating stations. WinCC uses an innovative thin-client strategy that
combines the advantages of the Web and terminal server
technologies.
Solutions of this type make minimal requirements of the
hardware, since the application itself runs on the terminal
server. Up to 25 thin clients can be connected to one terminal server. In this case, the clients only have the purpose of
entering data and of sending this data to a terminal server.
The terminal server carries out the actual processing (for
instance updating process screens) and returns the resulting
screen output to the client, which then displays it on its
monitor.
A Web Navigator Server depending on its license can supply up to 50 clients with process screens, messages and current process data.

Virtualization with SIMATIC WinCC
Description
To reduce the administration and maintenance effort, the
automation world is turning increasingly to virtualization and
the opportunity it provides to decouple applications from
hardware. This enables centralized management and further
simplifies backing up and restoring the system environment.
Client environments can be installed once and distributed
among one or two virtualization servers using virtual sessions (instances).
It is also much easier to implement IT security solutions on
central virtualization servers than on numerous client stations. Last but not least, virtualization eliminates the restriction of target devices to a particular hardware, thus allowing
even more complex applications to run on simple, low-cost
and robust thin clients. In addition to WinCC Clients,
WinCC Servers can now also be used with WinCC V7.0 SP3
under VMware ESXi, and engineering stations under
VMware Workstation or VMware Player.

Scripting
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
For individual customizing and extensions to the configuration tool, VBA has been integrated into the WinCC Graphics
Designer which is the user-friendly standard environment
for application-specific extensions. This means that the
Visual Basic knowledge that is available to many engineers
and users is transportable to WinCC. And apart from this,
standards for repeat engineering tasks save time and money!
This means that you can define any menu entries or fast configuration dialogs you like for your own user-specific objects.
VBScript or ANSI-C
Normally, pictures, logic operations and animation are configured via simple dialogs. Scripts can also be programmed
using VBScript or in ANSI-C when necessary, for example to
convert values, to initiate a report or to generate operator
messages.
VBScript has its own user-friendly editor with debugging support. The scripts themselves have access to the properties
and methods of all WinCC graphics objects, to controls and
to the object model of WinCC as well as applications of other
manufacturers.
With OPC XML DA, this is even possible across platforms for different operating systems via the Web between WinCC and
office applications, ERP/PPS systems (e.g. SAP/R3) or businessto-business portals. You can implement access to WinCC
archive data via OPC HDA (Historical Data Access) or by
employing WinCC OLE DB-Provider via Microsoft
DTSX-Packages.
When using the WinCC options Connectivity Pack and Connectivity Station, you can also access historical alarms via OPC
A&E. In OPC A&E, the system displays a WinCC message as an
alarm and, together with all the ancillary process values, passes
it on to any subscribers on the production or company management levels.
OPC A&E and OPC HDA are in the scope of delivery of the
WinCC/Connectivity Pack option.

Applications
The European standards describing the voltage characteristics of electricity supplied by public distribution networks
(EN 50160) and the testing and measurement techniques
(IEC 61000-4-30) provide the regulatory framework for this.
The variables to be monitored include:
Voltage dips and increases
Harmonic currents
Transients
Voltage variations (flicker)
Frequency changes
Basic principles for the evaluation of power quality
The power quality of an electric power grid is characterized
by 2 main properties: the grid stability and the voltage
quality:
Grid stability problems are recorded in the fault records of
the PQ devices.
The SICAM PQS system evaluates the voltage and current
quality by comparing the measured data with the grid
codes.
Grid codes define the limiting values of power quality
criteria, i.e. which limits may never be exceeded, or which
limiting values may be exceeded how often/how long. Grid
codes can be based on power quality standards such as
EN 50160.

SICAM PQ Analyzer
Applications
SICAM PQ Analyzer
The SICAM PQ Analyzer is a tool for the display of the data
measured by a PQ device and for their evaluation against the
power quality criteria by SICAM PQS system.
The SICAM PQ Analyzer provides comprehensive evaluation
options for archived PQ measuring data and fault records. In
addition to clearly structured fault record analysis, the fault
locator facilitates and accelerates the elimination of faults in
the power network. PQ violation reports provide a quick and
comprehensive overview of limit value violations. Scheduled
reports provide an overview of the development of measuring data over selectable time ranges. With the aid of a calendar tool available in all views, you can quickly and easily
select any time range over which data is to be displayed in a
diagram.

SICAM DISTO
Description
Description
An important function of digital protection is to store disturbance records for more accurate analysis of critical events in
the grid. As the memory for such records is limited in the
relays, it has proven to be convenient to extract them by use
of standardized communication and store them on a hard
disk on station level for further use.
Serial communication of digital protective devices to substation control systems has been standardized and published as
IEC standard protocol 60870-5-103. Recently, the new standard for power utility communication IEC 61850 has added
much more flexibility and performance to data exchange
with different IEDs.
SICAM DISTO (disturbance data storage) is a software package, which recognizes the occurrence of new disturbance
records in the connected protection relays, fetches them
by means of substation communication, and stores them
in preconfigured directories on the hard disk of a PC. For
easy analysis with different tools, DISTO uses the standardized COMTRADE format for all the files (according to
IEC 60255-24). Whereas DISTO has to translate incoming
disturbance records from IEC 60870-5-103 into COMTRADE,
the transmitted files in IEC 61850 are already in the right format. Some protection relays send COMTRADE files packed in
zip files over IEC 61850. SICAM DISTO recognizes such files

Remote access to the stored files is available by use of standard tools of the operating system.

SICAM 230
Description
Description
All energy suppliers whether they provide electricity,
natural gas, water, or district heating face ever greater
and more complex demands as they implement new energy
mixes.
SICAM 230 is a scalable system for a broad range of applications and can be used from an integrated energy system for
utility companies to a monitoring system for smart grid
applications.
The SICAM 230 architecture is completely consistent from
the on-site controls to the redundant multi-hierarchic control
system.
New in the control room: SICAM 230 supports multi-touch
controls. Use familiar gestures such as swipe or zoom for
optimal control to move or zoom in on a world view, for
example.
3.5/3
SICAM 230
Description
Topology modeling
SICAM 230 lets you display so-called world views, which
model the entire network topology down to the last detail.
The full world view is larger than the monitor, of course, so
SICAM 230 offers different zoom levels for varying degrees
of detail.
In the event of an error, one can see immediately what has
happened and where. Special colors highlight ground faults
and short circuits in the network map, for example. If the
SICAM 230 control system is directly coupled with protective
equipment, the site of trouble can be quickly isolated.
Project editor
The SICAM 230 editor helps to create and manage control
center projects through
convenient tools for fast response times,
a high level of transparency in complex projects,
the option of maintaining multiple projects simultaneously.

Description
Whether youre verifying safety in widely distributed processes for automation of power supply networks, the
functioning of new devices, or the interaction of systems
from different OEMs, you need to be able to regularly
check compliance with international standards such as
IEC 60870-5-101 using suitable testing and protocol systems.
Standard protocol IEC 60870-5-101 was published in
1995 and soon became the standard for serial telecontrol
communication in power supply networks. In addition,
IEC 60870-5-103 for serial to protective devices connection
and IEC 60870-5-104 for communication over LAN/WAN
have also become generally established.
These standard protocols are now supported by every major
OEM and required by almost all major equipment users. They
allow users, for the first time and at a reasonable cost, to create total solutions providing homogeneous communication
structures and data formats for automation networks comprised of systems from different OEMs. Siemens, as a longtime contributor to the work of the IEC, actively helped to
define and develop these standards and was therefore ideally placed to fully incorporate these standards into its products at an early stage.
Although the standards themselves are long past the development stage, problems still tend to arise during implementation of projects. These are due to slight differences
between systems (resulting from varying interpretations of
the standard, specific features of the project etc.) and can
have significant cost implications. In addition, in many cases,
operators will need to test equipment early on in the course
of a project although some of the system components or
devices are not yet available at that time.
SICAM Protocol Test System
These imponderables are a thing of the past with the
PC-based SICAM Protocol Test System. On the one hand,
the system allows you to very easily test and analyze
communication between systems that are based on the
IEC 60870-5-101, -103 and -104 protocols. On the other
hand, with the SICAM Protocol Test System, you can also
simulate automation devices and thus also test subsystems,
even if some devices of the overall system are not in place.
For example, the system contains predefined device
profiles according to IEC 60870-5-103 for simulating
protection devices.

Logic analyzer
To use the logic analyzer, you need the SICAM Protocol Test
System (IEC 60870) HW external hardware. It offers the
following range of features:
4 channels
V.28 input voltage level
10,000 signal changes recorded at time resolution of 40 s
(max. 72 hours)
Minimum signal pulse duration 20 s
Export of recorded data to file
Monitoring and simulation IEC 60870-5-104
The SICAM Protocol Test System can record all data transferred using the TCP/IP protocol, provided that all such data
is freely available to it on the Ethernet, for example, via a
hub. This means that the SICAM Protocol Test System cannot
be isolated from the systems under test via a switch or
router. You have the following options:
Additional filtering options when monitoring on serial interfaces, by protocol, IP address, host name and port number

In the past, control and protection have been completely
separated from one another. Only through the use of the
same basic technology (micro and signal processors) has it
become possible to integrate control and protection functions into one device: SICAM BC integrated bay controller.
The ACP (Automation, Control & Protection) system concept
has managed the technological prerequisite of uniting the
classic tasks measure, control, regulate and protect into a
combined device.

SICAM AK
Description
Description
SICAM AK is the large automation component for a flexible
mix of communication, automation and Input/Output. It
offers optimal support as master controller or RTU, gateway
or front-end, with local or distributed I/O. Versatile redundancy concepts are another asset of these components.
SICAM AK features high functionality and flexibility through
the implementation of innovative and reliable technologies,
on the stable basis of a reliable product platform.
For this, the system concept ACP (Automation, Control and
Protection) creates the technological preconditions. Balanced
functionality permits the flexible combination of automation,
telecontrol and communication tasks. Complemented with
the scalable performance and various redundancy configurations, an optimal adaptation to the respective requirements
of the process is achieved.
SICAM AK is thus perfectly suitable for automation with
integrated telecontrol technology as:
Telecontrol substation or central device
Automation unit with autonomous functional groups
Data node, station control device, front-end or gateway
With local or remote peripherals
For rear panel installation or 19-inch assembly
Scalable redundancy:
Component redundancy
Doubling of processing/communication elements
The intelligent terminal SICAM TM, EMIC and MIC:
Direct connection of actuators and sensors with wire crosssections up to 2.5 mm2
Can be located remotely up to 200 m
Binary input/output also for DC 110/220 V
Assembly on 35 mm DIN rail
Versatile communication capability
With SICAM AK, a variety of media can be utilized for local
and remote communication (wire connections, FO, radio,
dial-up traffic, GSM, GPRS, WAN, LAN, field bus etc.).
Through the simple installation of serial interface modules,
in total up to 66 communication interfaces are possible in
one SICAM AK, whereby a different individual protocol can
be used for each interface.
6.1/5
SICAM AK
Description
Easy engineering
An essential aspect in the overall economical consideration
are the costs that occur for the creation, maintenance and
service.
For this, the reliable SICAM TOOLBOX II is used.
Object orientation:
The object orientation makes it possible to also utilize the
same characteristics of same-type primary-technology units
and operational equipment (e.g. disconnectors, circuit
breakers, feeders etc.) for the configuration. The close coupling with the design tool ensures the consistent, uniform
documentation of the entire plant through to the circuit
diagram. Through this, considerable rationalization results
with engineering.
Open-loop and closed-loop control according to
IEC 61131-3: Open-loop and closed-loop control application
programs are created by means of CAEx plus according
to IEC 61131-3, a standard that is generally accepted and
recognized in the market. As a result, the training periods
are reduced considerably.
All engineering tasks can also be carried out remotely: All
engineering tasks, from the system diagnostics through to
the online test, can also be performed remotely with the
SICAM TOOLBOX II. For this, a separate communication link
between SICAM TOOLBOX II and SICAM AK is not necessary:
Every available communication interface can be used.
Using further automation units of SICAM TM, AK or BC, the
SICAM TOOLBOX II can be remotely positioned over an arbitrary number of hierarchies.
The access to the engineering data is fundamentally protected by a password.
SICAM AK
Description
The adaptation to the specific requirements of the application is achieved through the individual configuration and
through the loading of standard firmware and parameters.
Within their defined limits, the parameters thereby not only
influence the behavior of the firmware functions, but also
that of the hardware functions. With that, for all module
types, all mechanical parameter settings are omitted, such as
the changing of jumpers or loads, thus enabling not only the
online change, but also a consistent documentation of the
set parameters by the SICAM TOOLBOX II as well as a simplified storage.
System overview
Mechanics
Figure 6.1/4 and figure 6.1/5 show two types of basic mounting racks: module CM-2832 with 9 slots and module
CM-2835 with 17 slots.
Module CM-2833 (not pictured here) is the expansion
mounting rack for up to 16 peripheral elements outside the
basic mounting rack.
With the mechanics, value has been placed on flexibility and
easy handling. Consequently, the mounting rack is available
for rear panel installation or for 19" (swing) frame installation. Almost all necessary external connectors (e.g. communication, peripherals, external periphery bus) can be connected with the help of standard cables or prefabricated
cables without any additional tools (figure 6.1/6, figure
6.1/7, figure 6.1/8).

Peripheral element
Peripheral elements, as shown in figure 2.3/13, are used for
acquisition or output of process information and perform
process-oriented adaption, monitoring and processing of the
process signals at each point where the signals enter or leave
an automation unit. Processing is performed to some degree by
hardware (e.g. filter, ADC, DAC) and by
firmware (e.g. smoothing of measured values, time
tagging)
and receive
messages with process information,
periodical information, and
messages with system information (e.g. parameters)

Protocol element
A protocol element (figure 6.1/14) is used for the exchange
of data and thereby for the transmission of messages
over a communication interface to other automation units or
devices of third-party manufacturers, e.g. control systems.
The hardware of a protocol element is a communication
interface which dependent on system and interface can
be available in different ways:
Integrated on a basic system element
On a serial interface module (SIM), which is installed
directly or cascaded (SIM on SIM) on the basic system
element
On every interface provided by the SIM, a communication
protocol available for the interface can be loaded with the
SICAM TOOLBOX II.

Description
SICAM TM system concept makes it possible to combine
automation and telecontrol in one device. The intelligent
terminal modules are designed for easy mounting on
35 mm DIN rails.
Wide transfer interfaces are systematically reduced with
SICAM TM through direct connection of actuators and sensors
with wire cross-sections of up to 2.5 mm. Binary input and
output modules up to DC 220 V also open up savings potential
at interface level. For decentral input/output, individual modules can be located remotely up to 200 m away from the master control element. The wide range of different media for
local and long-distance communication can be used.
SICAM TM functions with IEC standards 60870-5-101/103/
104 and IEC 61850 for consistent addressing from acquisition to output. Especially noteworthy is the possibility of
offering client and server functionality on only one Ethernet
interface. This interface was certified by an independent
laboratory to verify interoperability. Seamless integration in
existing automation networks is also possible.
SICAM TOOLBOX II: Consistently simple engineering
All engineering activities, from system diagnostics to online
testing, can also be carried out extremely efficiently from
remote locations. The close interfacing with design tools
such as ELCAD ensures consistent documentation of the
entire system, while the user programs for closed- and openloop control functions are created in CAEx plus according to
IEC 61131-3.

Description
Figure 6.2/2 SICAM TM system architecture: connection of up to 16 peripheral elements via bus interface (electrical)
6.2/4
A clearly structured connection front featuring status indicator LEDs makes sure that things at the site remain clear and
transparent. The structure of the terminals permits direct
sensor/actuator wiring without requiring the use of intermediate terminals.
The I/O modules may, depending on the requirements, be
equipped with either an electrical or an optical bus, whereby
the peripheral signals can be acquired very close to their
point of origin. Consequently, wide cabling can be reduced
to a minimum.
SICAM TM
Description
System architecture
A SICAM TM forms an automation unit of the SICAM system
family and is constituted of the following components:
Master control element
Modular, expandable and detachable peripheral elements
Protocol elements for communications, mountable on the
master control element
6.2/5
SICAM TM
Peripherals
Peripherals
A peripheral element is constituted of
1 power supply module,
1 peripheral control module, and
up to 8 I/O modules
The respective data sheets document how many I/O modules
may actually be used per peripheral element and in what
order they can be used.
A key feature of SICAM TM is that it provides for the efficient
and simple connection of the process signals. This is done at
the I/O modules standing out for a robust housing, reliable
contacting and sound electronics.
The I/O modules are added side by side to the peripheral control module. Contact is established as soon as they engage
with one another, without requiring any further manual
intervention. Even so, every single I/O module can still be
exchanged separately and mounted on a DIN rail. It may be
installed horizontally or vertically.
Removable terminals (I/O connectors) are used for the simple
handling of modules when they are to be mounted or exchanged. Since the terminals carry the wiring, no connections need to be disconnected when devices are exchanged.
To interface peripheral elements to the master control element, a bus interface module must be fitted on the side of
the master control element. Using simple, standardized USB
cables, the peripheral control modules are connected to the
bus interface module, thereby reducing the assembly effort
required for their connection to a minimum.
The Ax peripheral bus permits the secured, serial, in-system
communication between the master control element and the
peripheral elements. Serial communication also renders it
possible to detach individual or all peripheral elements via
optical links up to 200 m from the master, with full system
functionality remaining intact.
Functions of the peripheral control module:
Secured data exchange with the master control element
Secured data exchange with the connected I/O modules via
the TM bus (Terminal Module Bus)
Monitoring of the connected I/O modules
Preprocessing of the input and output signals
Functions of the I/O modules:
Acquisition and output of binary and analog process signals
Secured data exchange with the peripheral control element
via the TM bus
The communication between the I/O modules and the
peripheral control module takes place via the TM bus according to the master/slave method, with the I/O modules being
the slaves.
By arranging the various modules side by side, contact will
be established automatically throughout the TM bus so that
no additional wiring is required.
6.2/6
SICAM TM
Peripherals
Communication
The communication function is used for the exchange of
data and thus for the transmission of messages via protocol elements to other automation units or control systems.
The hardware for the protocol elements are serial interface
modules (SIMs), which can be mounted on the master control element. On one master control element, up to 2 SIMs
can be mounted.
A serial interface module features:
two serial communication interfaces, or
one LAN communication interface (Ethernet) plus optional
serial interface, or
one Profibus interface (DP master)
Since a communication interface corresponds to one protocol element, a total of up to 4 protocol elements can be used
for each SICAM TM. This way, a multitude of communication
options is available.

Description
Description
SICAM Safety is conceived for safety-related automation
of the power distributions in hydropower plants as well as
in oil and gas sectors.
The goal of safety technology is to minimize the dangers of
plant operation for people and environment without restricting production more than necessary. The safety requirementss
of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC are found in the
following standards:
EN ISO 13849 Safety of machinery
Safety-related parts of control systems
IEC 61508/62061 Safety of machinery
Functional safety of safety-related electronic control
systems

SICAM Safety integrates safety functions simply and conveniently into the plant. In addition to automation functions, the
SICAM platform thus also fulfills the necessary safety requirements. One system, more functionality, standard engineering
for safety with efficiency.
SICAM platform extension
The SICAM Safety application upgrades existing SICAM
hardware with reliable open-loop and closed-loop control
functions. The SICAM Safety input/output modules are
designed as terminal modules, allowing them to be combined flexibly with SICAM standard modules.

SICAM Safety
Description
Two-channel solution
When you use SICAM Safety, process information from the
sensor via the control system to the actuators is processed
on a two-channel basis. To this end, the internal design of all
safety modules features two-channel technology. Two integrated processors process the firmware in parallel and detect
faults. The crucial advantage is that they also monitor each
other. If a malfunction occurs, the modules switch over reliably to a safe state or remain in this state.
Guaranteed reaction time: 100 ms from occurrence of a
criterion to triggering
Proven solution
Standard and safety-related automation functions are
separated.
The PROFIsafe protocol is used for communication between
a safety-related control unit and the safety-related peripheral equipment. Engineering in SICAM TOOLBOX II: You use
OPM II to process the safety parameters; then you finally
verify and validate safety controls and parameters with the
CAEx safety toolset.

SICAM CMIC
Description
Description
SICAM CMIC is a universal system. It is suitable for electrical
distribution substations, gas distribution substations, hydropower plants, pipelines, railway power supplies, as well as in
building protection or for alarm signaling.
Ambient conditions often place high demands on supply substations. No matter whether they are transformer substations,
utilities substations or small telecontrol stations they usually
lack heating and air-conditioning systems to guarantee adequate ambient conditions. This is exacerbated by restricted
space, which requires a very high degree of electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC). SICAM CMIC is perfectly equipped to
tackle these challenges. The device is suitable for broad application in the field, and can be deployed within a temperature
range from -40 to +70 C and where strict EMC requirements
apply.
The SICAM CMIC SD memory card has a number of functions.
First of all, it provides data for parameterizing the SICAM
device. This means that your accurate parameters are always
available locally, which saves you the need to perform complicated loading procedures on the PC.
Secondly, exchanging devices for service purposes is a simple
plug-and-play process, because the configuration is transferred directly to the replacement device with the SD memory card. Together with the extensive remote-fault diagnosis
options, this reduces downtimes to a minimum, from hours
to a matter of minutes.
Advantages at a glance:
Coupling of additional devices thanks to integrated node
functionality
Configuration, diagnostics and tests via a web server;
alternatively per SICAM TOOLBOX II
Reduction in work load through remote maintenance,
remote diagnosis and remote parameterization
Interlocking and local control in compliance with
IEC 61131-3 thanks to smart user programs
Local operation via display and function keys
Data storage on SD card; plug-and-play for start-up and
service
Use of SICAM CMIC under all ambient conditions thanks to
wide temperature range and extremely high degree of EMC
Extendibility of the digital I/O with up to 6 SICAM I/O
modules

SICAM EMIC
Description
Description
With growing pressure on costs in virtually all processes,
there is an increasing need to also automate smaller stations
to make better and more reliable use of existing equipment.
Modern, high-performance automation systems allow the
integration of smaller stations to provide universal and reliable management of complex processes. But smaller stations
are also being equipped with greater functionality because
of the increased demand for more information.
Flexible use
As the logical consequence of these demands, SICAM EMIC
represents the expansion of the proven product SICAM MIC.
SICAM EMIC is a low-cost, flexible and modular telecontrol
station, and is part of the proven SICAM RTU family. The
hardware consists of a master control element and various
I/O modules, and is designed for DIN rail mounting. The
proven I/O modules can be used and fitted on all products in
the SICAM AK, TM and MIC family.
From straightforward monitoring activities to control functions and the integration of additional equipment, modern
systems need to offer a wide range of functionality.
The master control element is used for interfacing and supplying the I/O modules and provides three communication
interfaces (1 x Ethernet and 2 x serial) to meet a wide range
of requirements. Complete flexibility is ensured here as well,
because different communication protocols can be allocated
freely. The option of automation functions rounds out the
range of functionality of the SICAM EMIC.

Requirements
Precise fault location is the base for a quick service restoration
at lowest costs. Monitoring the feeder condition such as load
or cos helps to prevent critical network situations. Thereby,
power system availability and reliability is improved in a very
economic way.

Description
SICAM FCM is a fault locator which is based on protection
know-how and newest low-power sensor technology. Using
the neutral-point displacement voltage, reliable results in fault
detection, especially for compensated and isolated networks,
are achieved. Monitoring of capacity utilization of distributionnetwork components is supported by comprehensive measurands which give an overview on the network status. An instantaneous reading of the load, e.g. of a particular transformer
running at 120 %, enables load shedding exactly where and
when necessary. Therefore, SICAM FCM provides all information via Modbus RTU to judge the distribution-network health
condition.

SICAM DC
Description
Description
Smart Grid is a consistently intelligent power supply system
that ensures a reliable and efficient power distribution in order
to meet the constantly increasing requirements imposed on
our power supply. The AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure)
systems make a major contribution to the implementation of
this task. The individual system components from the smart
meter and data concentrator to the central IT provide power
consumption data of the connected customers as well as information necessary for the network control so that the optimal
power supply is ensured.
Applications
The data concentrator is one of the most important components within the AMI system and plays a key role in this context. The following two complementary applications can be
roughly identified:
1) Communication gateway for data from smart meters
ensures reliable data transmission (power consumption
etc.) from all connected smart meters to and from the
central IT, e.g. Siemens Energy IP.
2) Intelligent network node provides important data for the
network operation and works as an active element in the
network control.
Operation
The SICAM DC is the first data concentrator with display and
function keys for local operation offered by SIEMENS. Apart
from the display, the integrated web server also simplifies
handling. As a result, the fast and easy interaction with the
device is possible without additional tools.

Communication
To ensure the communication with the connected smart
meters, the SICAM DC provides power line communication
(PLC) based on PRIME1) and DLMS/COSEM2). The communication from the data concentrator to the central IT can be performed via glass fiber, Ethernet, radio (e.g. GPRS, WiMax) or
B-PLC (Broad Band Power Line Communication). The SICAM
DC provides web services for the data transmission.

distances. It can be used for protection applications, e.g.
overcurrent protection, signal comparison, teleprotection
or as I/O expansion in substation automation systems.
Function
Via binary inputs, all kinds of binary signals of switchgear/
protection scheme (for example tripping commands, switch
position signal, fault and status indications) are securely
detected. This information can directly be distributed at this
SICAM I/O-Unit via contacts, or be transmitted via communication links to further SICAM I/O-Units or to automation systems.
Secured telegrams are used for the communication via
Ethernet or serial connections. The parameter setting of
the I/O-Unit is simply carried out with a standard web
browser at the PC which is connected by the Ethernet
interface.
The SICAM I/O-Unit can be set as:
I/O mirror: Point-to-point transfer of binary signals
between two SICAM I/O-Units via Ethernet or a serial
connection. Signal inputs and outputs assignable by
the user.

When using the SICAM I/O-Units as I/O mirror according to
figure 8.1/2, the devices transmit the binary signals bidirectionally. The transmission takes place between the two
devices over serial links (option) or over Ethernet networks.
Via the relay output contacts, voltages up to AC/DC 250 V and
currents up to AC/DC 5 A can be switched. The pick threshold
of the binary inputs can be set by the user on different
levels.
Signal inputs and outputs can be assigned by the user.

8.1/9
A maximum of 6 binary single signals can be transmitted bidirectionally over the pilot wire. The additional delay caused
by the transfer over the communication converter and pilot
wire is less than 1 ms.
A typical application is the signal comparison of a directional
overcurrent protection device via pilot wires. In this case, the
definite time-overcurrent protection device is connected to
the SICAM I/O-Unit via contacts, and binary inputs and
directional signals are transferred.
