5 Field Trips mile away from James Bickely Elementary School in Clovis N.M. for 3 Grade Students

1. A Nature Walk- The students will learn about adaptations animals have to survive in their habitat by
drawing the habitat and the animal and identifying what adaptations the animal has that helps them
survive in that area.

Common Core State Standards: RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events,
scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to
time, sequence, and cause/effect.
W.3.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information
clearly.

Subject: Science, Writing, Art

Activity: At Green Acres Park the children will sketch a picture of the habitat they see and will include the
animals they see in that habitat. Then in a short paragraph under their sketch they will include the
adaptations the animals have that help them survive in that habitat.

Assessment: The teacher will look at their drawings and read their paragraph to see if the student
understands what an adaptation is.

2. Bringing Water to an Ancient Village- The student will learn how ancient civilizations may have had
to transport water using only a limited amount of materials. Then they will describe their experience as
well as identify differences between an ancient village and the towns we live in now.

Common Core State Standards: W.3.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from
print and digital sources;
take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

W.3.2a Introduce a topic and group related information together; include illustrations when
useful to aiding comprehension.

Subject: Social Studies, Writing, Engineering

Activity: At Green Acres Park students will be sorted into teams. Each team will be given the same set of
materials and their goal will be to transport water from the lake to their bucket, which will represent their
village, using only the materials that have been given to them. Afterwards they will participate in a
discussion about what worked and what didnt and will talk about in a group how we get water now. After
the discussion students will be required to write a compare and contrast paper using their experience
from the activity to support their answer.

Assessment: Teacher will facilitate discussion and the teacher will read their paper and provide feedback
with a rubric.

3. Rollerworld Skating Rink: Students will find the difference between the times it takes them walk 10
laps around the rink and then skate 10 laps around the rink, and use addition to check their answer.
Common Core State Standards: 3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction.
Subject: Math
Activity: At the skating rink students will be divided into small groups and each group will walk 10 laps at
their normal pace. The teacher will keep track of their times. Once each team has walked they will then
skate 10 laps. Again teacher will keep track of their times. At the end students will be required to find the
difference between their two times and then check their answer using addition.

Assessment: Teacher will check their subtraction problems.
4. Lowes Grocery Store-Students will learn how much it would cost to buy the ingrediants they would
need to create a 3-course meal for the class by listing what they need and adding up how much
everything would cost.
Common Core Standards: 3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction.
3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using
equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the
reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. (This
standard is limited to problems posed with whole numbers and having
whole-number answers; students should know how to perform operations in the conventional order when
there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations).

Subject: Math

Activity: Before going to the store the class will be split into groups of 3. One group will have list the
ingrediants they would need for a salad, another group will have to make a list of what they would need
for a main course, and the last group will have to make a list of what they will need to make a desert. At
the store the groups will have to find the prices of what they will need and will have to determine if they
need more than one of an item to make sure there is enough for everybody. After the groups they will
have to add up their total and then they would have to collaborate with the other groups to find the grand
total of their dinner.

Assessment: Teacher will check each groups addition work to ensure it is correct.

5. Mcdonalds: Students will learn to take information they are told and use that information to tell a story
from a different perspective than their own by pretending to be a hamburger explaining how they became
a big mac in a narrative format.

Common Core State Standards: RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events,
scientific ideas or concepts,
or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and
cause/effect.
W.3.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective
technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Subject: Language Arts, Writing

Activity: Students will listen to a Mcdonalds employee explain the steps to making a Big Mac. Students
may use pictures or words to take notes so they will remember the steps in order. After the explanation
students will pretend to be a hamburger and write a narrative from the point of view of the hamburger who
is telling its story of how it became a Big Mac.

Assessment: Teacher will read the narratives and grade using a rubric.
