6 Quotes and 6 Quotes Turned Into Paraphrases 1

Wilcox Senior Project English 7-8

6 Quotes from your sourcesto be used as quotes, and 6 quotes being turned into paraphrases. Due
th
MondayDecember 15 .

Review your sources, and find 6 quotes you'd like to use in your paper. You may need to type them out,
word-for-word, because .pdf files do not always allow you to copy-paste. Make sure you get it 100%
exact.
You'll be creating a new Word document in Google Drive/Docs for this assignment. Make sure you label
this well, and send me a link. For all of your quotes, type the quote, in quotation marks, with a
parenthetical citation (Smith 45) at the end, after the quotation marks.
If you have more than one author, check online for MLA format for multiple authors, and do the same if
you have no author.
Then, choose 6 other selections of the sources to be used as summaries or paraphrases in your essay,
and cite them appropriately.
For paraphrases, take the author's words and change them into your language and wording, but you keep
the same meaning and information. These will also use the citation (Smith 45) as we use above for
quotes, or if you have no author, use the article title in quotation marks ("How to Write a Great Research
Paper!"). You can always use a signal phrase: Smith, in his article Blah, Blah, Blah says that
These will be the quotes and paraphrases you'll use in your paper! Show Ms. W. as you work on these to
get feedback.
REMEMBER--anything you didn't know before you began researching would NEED to be counted
as a paraphrase in your paper, and you would want to mention the author in every paragraph
where you use information from the source.
SAMPLE:
The sample below uses only 3 of each, but it shows you what your assignment should look like.
Quotes used as Quotes:
Use the guidelines in Hacker and Sommers (111) to decide if you should use a quote:
Language is especially vivid or expressive
Exact wording is needed for technical accuracy
It is important to let the debaters of an issue explain their positions in their own words
The words of an authority lend weight to an argument
The language of a source is the topic of your discussion (as in an analysis or interpretation)
Remember to cite the quotes properly, using either a signal phrase to lead into the quote, or a citation
with all the information needed: authors name(s), or if no author is present, use the article title in
quotation marks, and the page number or paragraph number.
Quotes should be shorter (less than 2-3 lines). Only one longer quote can be used,
and it must be formatted as a block quote or an in-set quote. See our online sources.

Quotes Turned into Paraphrases:
Show 6 more quotes, properly cited, and then, below each of the quotes, show your paraphrase with the
signal phrase and citation as if you were putting them into your paper.
Choose your 3 quotes here for a different reason than for those above: choose selections of text where

You need the information but not the wording

Youre capturing more than a sentence or two of information, and the whole paragraph might
refer repeatedly to the same source, as in a summary
Your voice and writing style must shine through, not only your ability to find the information.
You show your understanding of the quoted material by being able to translate into your own
language.
Clues for paraphrasing:

Pretend to tell a friend what you learned from your source.

Use the authors name and page number or paragraph number in the signal phrase and/or
citation.
Use different words, and different sentence structure for your paraphrased sentence.

This student has used all paraphrases from one author. This is not what youd want to do in your
paper. All of your 3 sources should be represented in your Quotes and Paraphrases hereThis shows
me that youve read them all, and that youre planning on using a balance of sources in your paper.
