Unit Outcome:
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when
drawing inferences from the text.
Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe
the differences in focus and the information provided.
Lesson Outcomes:
TLW use the instructions from the text to create homemade ice cream.
TLW compare and contrast the books interpretation of making ice cream, to their firsthand
experience of making ice cream.
Rationale/Purpose for Lesson:
The purpose of this lesson is to gain knowledge in using information from text to comprehend
and use in daily life.
Assessment:
The assessment will be informal. I will walk around the room and see if the students are
correctly following the steps that they read to create their homemade ice cream.
Introduction:
I will introduce the lesson by talking about ice cream, where it came from and how it is made.
Procedures:
1. Introduction- Talk about ice cream. What do we know about it? Where does it come
from?
2. Raz kids read aloud
3. Split students into groups
4. Groups read and follow the direction to make their icecream

5. Closure- Students will eat and compare and contrast their experiences about making ice
cream to the books interpretation.

Homework:
There will be no homework for this lesson.
Closure:
I will close the lesson by having the students eat the ice cream. They will them compare and
contrast their experience in making ice cream to the books interpretation of making ice cream. I
will also talk about the continuation of the lesson into tomorrow. We will be reading a book
about how ice cream is made at a factory, and we will compare and contrast the two kinds of
ice cream.
Evaluation and Reflection:
I plan on evaluating my lesson during the closure. I will ask the students what they have learned, and
what things they liked and didnt like about the lesson.
