What are atoms?

The

All

building blocks of matter.

atoms known as of today

are found on Periodic table.

ATOMIC
STRUCTURE

Parts of an Atom

1. Nucleus (mostly all the mass found

here)
a. Proton (+) Positive charge
b. Neutron (0) neutral charge

2. Electron Shells

also called energy levels &

orbitals

electrons (-) negative charge

make up the volume of the atom

What holds
an Atom together?

TWO FORCES
1. Electromagnetic force
Like charges REPEL (-,-) or (+,+)
Opposite charges ATTRACT ( +, -)

Ex: ATOM, magnet

2. Strong nuclear force

Atomic Number tells you # of protons

(+) in the nucleus.

# Protons (+) = # of Electrons(-)

in a neutral atom

# of Neutrons Subtract the Atomic #

from atomic mass

Valence Electrons- # of electrons in

the outermost shell of the atom
used

in bonding of atoms

Group

# on Periodic table
tells you how many valence eyou should have

1st shell can hold up

to 2 electrons (e-)

ATOMIC STRUCTURE

2nd shell can hold

up to 8 electrons (e-)
3rd shell can hold
up to 8 electrons

1st shell
2nd shell
