AnalysisofFernHill
Inthepoem,FernHill,byDylanThomasthereisalotofsymbolism.Thesymbolism
lieswithinthediction,similes,metaphors,personificationandimagery.Theoverallgoalofthe
poemistoaffirmthehappinesschildhoodandinnocenceofferswhileremindingthereaderthat
everybodyeventuallygrowsoldanddies.Theliterarydevicesusedinthispoemhelptheauthor
reachthegoalofthepoem.
Theimageryoflightandcolorareeverywhereinthispoem.thecolorgreenisused
throughoutthispoemasasymboloflife,youth,innocenceandgrowth.Stanzaone,linetwois
wherethereaderisfirstintroducedtothecolorgreen,AbouttheLiltinghouseandhappyasthe
grasswasgreen.Tothereadergreenisusedatthatpointinthepoemtosymbolizethecomfort
andinnocenceofthechildinthepoem.Thereaderencountersgreenagaininstanzatwo,line

symbolofthejoy,thecomfortandthelifeofchildhood.Alloftheimagesandcolorsrepresent
innocenceandchildhoodasabeautifulthing.Theauthoremphasizesthatitisjoyfulpartofthe
humanlife,butthejoyofyouthfulnesswilleventuallyfade.Presentingyouthandinnocenceasa
joyfulthinghelpsthereaderrelateorrecallthegoodnessoftheirownchildhoodwhilereminding
themthatlifeisnotalwayspeachesandcream.
Personification,simileandmetaphorareimportantcomponentsusedinthepoemtohelp
Thomasreachthegoalofportrayingthechildhoodjoypeoplehaveeventhoughtheywillgrow

Dictionwasveryhelpfulinexpressingtheyouthandinnocenceofthepoem.Stanzafour,
linethirty,Shining,itwasAdamandmaiden,isanexampleoftheimportantdiction.Herethe
authorusesthewordmaideninsteadofusingEvewhenheisreferringtoAdamandEve
fromthebookofGenesisintheBible.TheauthormakesthechangefromEvetomaidensothat
thepoemcanmaintainitsinnocence.IftheauthorweretouseEve,thelinewouldnothavethe
sameeffect.Eve,fromtheBible,isatemptressandrepresentssin,evilandthefallofman.
MaidenwasusedinsteadofEvebecausewhenwethinkofamaiden,wethinkofayoung,sweet,
innocentgirl.Theuseofmaidenismuchmoreeffectiveinreachingthegoalsofthepoem.
FernHillbyDylanThomasusesimportantliterarydevicessuchasdiction,imagery,
simileandmetaphor.Thesedeviceshelptosymbolizetheinnocenceandjoyofchildhood.The
goalofthepoemistoexpresstherealityoflife.Childhoodisgloriousformostpeopleandajoy
toremember,butallgoodthingsmustend.Plainandsimple,onedayeverypersonwillgrowold
anddie.Peoplehavenocontroloverit,buttimedoes,justlikethatoldclichephrase,onlytime
willtell.Thomascleverlyusesthedevicesandsymbolismtosharewiththereaderthegoalof
thepoemwhichismerelytellingaboutlifeandtherealityofitall.
