How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.
LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

The animation is set in the south east of England in the 21st century. A male student who has
just started university has bought a brand new Apple MacBook air 11. The student gets
home with his new laptop and places it onto his desk and leaves the room again. Its quite
for a while and then out of nowhere appear two little plasticine figures, climb onto his desk
and start to lift up the lid to the laptop. They then stare in amazement at the laptop as it
opens by itself and turns on. The two characters proceed to play with all of the cool and
useful features such as Safari, Aperture, iPhoto and so on. The character also climb all over
the laptop to entertain themselves. This animation will show how practical and easy to use
the MacBook is. This will also show how user friendly the computer is.
The student is 19 years old and is around 6ft tall. He still lives with his parents because he
doesnt have to travel far to go to university every day. The two plasticine characters are
around 4-5 inches tall and have a liking towards laptops.
How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will meet the requirements of the brief by successfully creating a 30 second stop
motion animation TV advert consisting of 25 images per seconds. The stop motion
will also include 2 characters made from plasticine. My advert will be promoting the
Apple Macbook Air 11 Laptop.
Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
There are risks involved when creating stop motion animations, this can be
something like cutting yourself when creating a background using scissors. Another
thing that can occur is tripping over tripods and background sets on the floor. I will be
able to avoid one of these because my background will be computer generated from
a green screen rather than being made by hand.
Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age
restrictions
There are no legal issues involved with my advert as for the music I will email the
record company that the song artist is signed to so there is no copyright
infringement. This advert will be available to watch by all ages so there are no age
restrictions. The product that I will be displaying in my advert will be an apple
product so I will also have to introduce product placement markings within my
advert.

Why are you using that particular format?

I am using the stop-frame technique as I am told to do so within the brief. I am using the
plasticine animation technique in my advert because I want to be able to have a character in
my advert that has better movement then a plastic figure, also I wanted to have something
that I had created myself.
What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
When using this format you are able to make your character from scratch, this means you
can choose whatever colour you want them to be and whatever stature and build you want
them to be.
What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
The limitations of using plasticine models in my production is making them stay upright for
extended amounts of time. The way I can solve this is by using a wire armature, this will give
the character a more rigid body but it is also able to move with ease. Also one other problem
is that when using plasticine, once it has been taken out of it packaging and is molded into
position, it will start to dry up so I will have to shoot the animation quickly as I will only have a
day to do so.
What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?

There are many examples of plasticine animation but I have chosen to show the three most
famous examples of this technique. All of these shows are all made by one Animation
Company, Aardman animations. Aardman animation have been around since 1972, the
earliest production from the three shown is morph which was made in 1977. Next to be
produced was creature comforts in 1989, then shortly after Wallace and Gromit, this has
been Aardmans most successful and popular production.

What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation will be my MacBook Air. This is because this is the product that
I will be advertising.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
In my TV advert, it will start off with the laptop in the back ground, the two plasticine
characters will then walk onto the set and will then open up the laptop and start to go onto all
of the popular applications on the computer and show what they do.

In my advert I will have two characters both made out of plasticine. I will change the colour of
the plasticine for each character so the audience knows which one is which. In the advert,
the two characters will be moving around and using the laptop. My plasticine characters will
be built around wire armatures. These armatures will help my characters stay up throughout
the production of my stop motion.

What will they be made of?

My two characters will be both made out of plasticine and a strong wire armatures. I have
chosen these materials because plasticine is very easy to mold and move about, this make it
very good for stop motion. The only problem that I face with the plasticine is that over time
plasticine wont be able to hold its weight and therefore the character would lose shape and
fall to the ground. This can be fixed by using a wire armature, the armature will act like a
skeleton for the models with the character actually being made around it. This will stop the
model from losing its shape, falling over and breaking.
Movement of characters
How are you going to make your characters move?

I am going to make my characters move by making them around a wire armature. The
armature is going to help the character move without breaking, it also helps the character to
stand up and stay for long amounts of time.
What is the purpose of an armature?

The purpose of an armature is to essentially act like a skeleton for the model, this will help
the model to stay upright and refrain from falling over and/or breaking.
Will you use them for your characters?

I will be creating and using armatures for both of the characters involved in the animation.
If so, how will you make it?

I will make my armature out of strong wire by shaping and coiling the wire around its self,
forming it to the shape of a body. Then I will added the plasticine around the armature to
form the shape of the body
Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

What audio will you have for your animation?
Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.
What actions will need sound effects?
Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

The audience will find that swearing and inappropriate actions can be distasteful and
offensive to certain people.

I believe that my animation will my chosen audience because the advert is entertaining but
also include factors which will help someone further their education (the laptop).

The audience will be able to see my animation online as I will be uploading it onto my
college YouTube account and onto my Weebly page.

The natural day light will need to be blocked out because the direction of the light changes
frequently so will make the animation look bad and non-consistent.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.
To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).
For example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
