Is Facebook Making Us Lonely
In Is Facebook Making Us Lonely, Stephen Marche addresses the concern of people
becoming lonely due to the impact of social media. Accordingly he emphasizes that the reason
people are becoming lonely is because they prefer to be on social media, than have face to face
communication. In addition he examined and did studies to provide his reasons. Nevertheless all
the different ways social media affects our daily lives were stated. Stephen Marche successfully
analyzed his argument by providing specific reasons and giving supporting facts.
Certainly the main argument in Marches article is the fact that people are becoming
lonely though social media. Various studies have shown loneliness rising drastically over a very
short period of recent history (Marche 2). The Audience that this article and its information are
for is people who can relate to or use social media. In contrast with this though social media
users would not be the only ones affected by loneliness. Others in the same household as the
affected person might also suffer from the effects.
Parches article emphasizes the use of facts that support his concern. His studies show
that, 20 percent of Americans about 60 million people are unhappy with their lives because of
loneliness (Marche 2). The evidence that is discovered by these studies supports his claim very
well. The results are certainly valid for his argument. By this he portraying that the use of social
media can have serious effects on someone.

The main reason for his argument is to imply that digital technology has increased the
chances of people isolating themselves. His reasons were that instead of going out and meeting
friends the public is making friends through social media cites. Additionally more activity is
done on the internet than physical activity. For example, posting a status or comment on
Facebook to inform your friends about something or how you are feeling. In the same way that
Marche specks about the negative effects he also expresses that social media can be good if it is
uses properly and not in excess.
To conclude, researches have showed that loneliness is not something that social media is
doing to us but something we are doing to ourselves. His article presents a very well balanced
perspective. The article addresses good and logical reasons. Marche did a great job at presenting
his argument and emphasizing all its important parts. The main message is that when someone
becomes lonely its not always due to social networks.
