Photography Unit
Lesson Overview:
Students take notes on photography shots and practice them. Ultimately they will
create a 5 shot sequence telling a story.
5 days of 80 minute lessons.

Students will:
1. Design and compose a video based story.
2. Assess whether it effectively uses different composition shots to tell a story.
ASSESSMENTS
Students will think of a story, record 10 video shots, and edit the shots to compose a
visual story. Students will present their videos after theyve been finished.

Students turn in assignment via google drive. Teacher projects it on whiteboard for class
to assess as a whole.
Students take notes on basic notes in the first class of the unit. They practice what they
learn by taking the different types of shots. Teacher gives feedback by supervising
student picture taking. Students also submit their pictures via google drive for class
feedback. Students take notes on composition shots in the 2nd class. Students practice
the information via a scavenger hunt. Teacher gives feedback by supervising student
picture taking. Students also submit their pictures via google drive for class feedback.

Students work in groups or get one on one help. There is a lot of differentiation as the
students both take notes and get hands on experience.

LESSON PROCEDURE and SEQUENCE


List the steps on how to conduct this lesson, give enough information so that another instructor would be able to
conduct the lesson but without giving a complete script yet still including important vocabulary or questions

Students take out sheet of paper and be ready to take Cornell Notes. Students take notes as
teacher explains different kinds of basic photography shots.
Students get into groups of 3 and fill out a camera permission form.

Once completed, students get camera from teacher.
3 Teacher demonstrates how to use camera as the cameras get checked out. Students are

monitored by teacher for correct use of camera as they receive 20 minutes to practice taking
the shots using the camera.
Students upload pictures to google drive, teacher shows it to class and class gives feedback

using their notes/knowledge.
5 Students take cornell notes on composition shots.
6 Students get into their groups and get cameras again.
Students get 20 minutes to take indoor shots and 20 minutes to take outside shots. Students
7 are taking as many different types of composition shots as they can. Teacher supervises and
provides feedback.
Students upload pictures to google drive, teacher shows it to class and class gives feedback

using their notes/knowledge.
Students get instructions for 5 shot story. Students create a shotlist based off of teacher

template provided. Once shotlist gets approval, students can check out camera.
10 Students get 30 minutes to shoot indoor and another 30 minutes to shoot outdoors.
11 Students upload pictures to google drive. Teacher shows to class and class provides feedback.
